For the money this is a no-brainer compared to an Am Std.

When I saw this, It made me almost regret just purchasing last week my Road Worn Strat. I did some research and found out that it has a Poly finish. I'm still glad I got my road worn. It will be here tomorrow!

Look at the vibrato cavity cover plate. The holes are not correct. It's pretty...but a classic Eldred 'snapshot' guitar.

You're better off buying a 50's Classic Series Strat...

Because select ash is such a crappy tone wood for a Strat body.

Fender Japan have been making these for a while. I believe they also made a version with lace sensors.

You guys should look on the Fender Japan website. You would be surprised at what models they have..

These days, from what I've seen A/B'ing them side by side there is very little to choose between CIJ and MIM '50s spec Strats. You might still find the CIJs finished to a higher standard, but only in tiny details and probably nothing important. Some people claim the switch and pots are not so good on the CIJ guitars: all I can say is I've had no problems whatsoever with my CIJ '57 and my '75 JB - they're not CTS pots, but it's not as if the Japanese don't know how to do electronics, after all...

I'd suggest a choice comes down to personal feelings about small things like the colour of knob plastic, body wood and such.

Hi Lightnin: Fender Japan do a bewildering variety of models. The ST54, ST57 and ST58 are polyester, usually over alder for sunbursts and Eastern basswood for solid finishes. However, there are also the ST54/VSP and ST57/VSP Strats that have nitro over ash bodies. The necks are also nitro, like the American Vintage guitars.

The one in Bluesky's link has an ash body and certain other features which suggest it's a VSP, though it doesn't say so. In that case it has a nitro bod and neck. Fantastic price for that spec guitar!

There are a lot of other CIJ variations on the '50s theme as well. For example:

ST54-LS: alder body, 22 frets, Lace Sensor pickups, TBX and an active mid-boost, a la Clapton
ST57-TX: as the ST57 but with Texas Specials
ST57-TX/ALG: Texas Specials, blonde white over alder finish, and a Gilmourish gold anodised pickguard
ST57/ASH: 10.5" radius fingerboard, US electronics, an ash body covered in truly horrible dayglo trans colours

- and so on. It pays to learn your way through the CIJ model numbering scheme!

Cheers - C
