I'm in the last phase of restoring a Candy Apple Red Strat Plus.

Started with a '92 stripped CAR Plus body that needed a new right bridge insert and everything else.

Then a stripped '93 Maple Plus Neck with a broken truss rod. The luthier got that project.

The everything else is new & installed by me, LSR Nut, Schaller Locking Staggered Tuners, 2 point Tremolo Bridge, Output Jack & Plate, Pickguard, Pots (TBX for tone 1) & 5 way Switch.

I used my Amalfitano SP SSS Pickups.

Now I want to put in a recently acquired set of Lace Sensor Ultra Pups (Blue, Gold, Red Dually). I've got the pots & switches but haven't located a pickguard yet.

Anyway, here it is:

Can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier for a white or pearl white pickguard for Lace Sensor Ultra configuration (Dually, Single, Single)?

You can buy a regular HSS pickguard from WD Music and drill yourself the hole between the two tone controls to install the 3-way toggle.

If you don’t see what you are looking for, call 800-449-9348 ext. 112 or email custompickguards@wdmusic.com

The only place I could find a true cut Ultra pickguard is at http://www.chandlerguitars.com/ You have to dig through their list of many templates and find Strat Ultra 3 hole mount (if that is the type of dually pickup you have). They are show but the guard are just like the original Ultra with the proper rounded dually cut to fit the pickups and the middle pickup is properly centered. If those things are not important to you then use the type of guard that Chromeface suggested. I use those often too for custom builds.

Here is the Ultra cut guard:

Here is the common cut guard, Note the open area around the dually and the off center middle pickup:

Chromeface I'll check out WD, thank you.

Xhefri, your site, sales and various posts got me started on this build. I noted your comparison of Middle pup placement in a previous post, I'd like mine centered as well.

It is the 3 hole mount for the bridge. Chandlerguitars here I come.

Now I need to figure out the wiring for a Neck/Bridge position on the 5 way switch...and Mid only...and...maybe I need a 6 way switch!

Thank you both for taking the time to reply.

- Dan

Thanks Xhefri, I do want to use the Ultra wiring.

Trying anything really different would drive me crazier!

I'm also restoring an '03 Am. Deluxe Strat, 2 tone burst. The previous had owner broken the strap button screw and left 3/4" in the upper horn. Had to "Waller" it out, fill w/Wood Epoxy, paint, Super Glue, 4 grits of paper then polish like a mad monkey!

Really like the Soft V Neck, S-1 switching & SCN Pups. This is a Dec. 2003, though supposedly they didn't start till '04.

I have an Am Vtg. FSR Ltd. Ed. CAR '57 Stratocaster - the Limited Edition part is the Candy Apple Red finish - supposedly 1 of 43 produced.

I'm also a classic car guy... going on 40 years...

Whenever someone says Candy Apple Red... whether it be a Mustang or a Stratocater, that means a Metal Flake paint.

It is not a large Flake, but small.

My Candy Apple Red Strat is a Metal Flake Red, as was a '67 Camaro I once owned.

To me, your Strat looks more like Tomato Red (same color used in the Italian Flag), not Candy Apple.

Still looks great, but I wouldn't call it Candy Apple.

cheers!

American Deluxe Strats made in 2003 were featured with a 3-colour sunburst finish and a Modern C-Neck shape.

The 2-colour sunburst V-Neck was introduced in 2004.

You sure know your finishes Lightin MN! What I've read is that Fender's "Candy Apple Red" had the Silver undercoat, which mine does.

Maybe mine is a "Tomato Red", although I can't recall ever reading that Fender used that name. Not a very attractive term. :D

chromeface, that was my understanding as well, Version 2 of the Am. Deluxe was an '04 model. I think they started a little earlier in reality.

Mine has a Dec '03 stamp on the Neck Heel and the Serial # has a DZ3 prefix. I believe the SCN Pickups were also a version 2 feature. Definitely has the Soft V Neck & 2T Burst.

I've read that Bill Lawrence supervised the early production runs of SCN Pickups to assure high QC. As with any 'Net Factoid, that would need 2nd & 3rd source affirmation for reliability. My repeating it doesn't count.

Now I've managed to hijack my own thread! LOL

Hey Xhefri, I found the Ultra wiring in some of your posts on the Fender Forums (12/11). Very clear pics and I *think* I can follow the diagrams.

At that time you diverged from stock Ultra wiring, for instance not running the TBX through the Vol pot. Is that schematic still your Ultra wiring?

Thanks for your generosity in sharing information so freely and accurately!

CAR's color varies a lot due to how it is applied. I have a whole section on my website about Candy colors: http://xhefriguitars.com/page2.html#C13 Also show part of a stripped body so one can see how they were made. Like you I use to be into classic cars and ran a resto-shop. Did CAR a few times and it was a serious pain. Not just simply metallic red but a complicated process of base coat, color coats, clear coats, that was really tricky to get the color even. Large flake would have been holo-flake like used on boats. True Candy Red is a fine silver base coat with several transparent red coats followed by cleat coats. Here are some samples:

@danagos

I suggest you to send a PM to our guru John C for more detailed information concerning your guitar (and the first batch of 2nd generation American Deluxes in general).

BTW I think he had already read the topic, so you can expect a reply from him soon! :)

Thanks chromeface, there is one thing that I can't find any information on, that is how the early S-1 switching was configured.

I read in a Fender Tech Talk article http://www.fender.com/news/s-1-switching/ that it was introduced in summer 2003, just a few months before my Am. Deluxe was manufactured, and that the switching configuration has changed over the years.

Regardless, I'll have to trace the wiring. It's a marvelous gizmo for a modder-at-heart. Gotta get under the hood after the lacquer dries on my upper horn redo repair! (lacquer - Xhefri tip from Ultra Flame post)

Wiring, other than the basic configurations, is my weak point. I intend to try my Amalfitano SP set in place of the SCN's. That I can do.

I'm not sure how to PM John C on this forum  , but if you read this sir, please feel free to illuminate.

p.s. Thanks Xhefri, the Ultra pickguard has been ordered from Chandler.music.

If you had trouble to send him a PM, don't worry. I'm pretty sure you'll have a reply within the next days.

The S1 switch was initially offered on certain American Series guitars and basses made during that period.

The feature didn't came into surface on the American Deluxe series until 2004.

PS. If you plan installing the regular American 2-point tremolo in your custom-made Ultra, you'll need to install a tremsetter to stay in tune. Otherwise I suggest you using a mini Floyd bridge instead.

Don't get me wrong... it's a great Red. I know Fender doesn't have the color Tomato Red, but it's a really vibrant red and is actually the name of, and the official, proper color for the red portion of the Italian Flag.

cheers!
