Hi there

I recently bought an American Standards strat with the old standard strat pickups.
Are the new fat '50s any good. I have heard lots of complaints about them....

Gotta say I've not heard any complaints about fat 50's, and you won't hear any from me.

I have a 2012 with Fat 50's. I love them and get nothing but compliments from those that hear and play it.

I can't say that I have ever heard anything remotely negative about these pickups.

I think he might be referring to the guy that thought he was getting Texas Specials in his American Special Hand Stained and it had Fat 50s he went on and on about it in a thread to the point of agony.
He was just complaining about it not having Texas Specials like they advertised.

That was me... actually I would have been quite happy with Fat 50s... but the FSR Hand-Stained Am Spl does not have Custom Shop pups at all despite GC incorrectly advertising them as having TSs... I wouldn't say it drove me to agony, but it did drive me to return the guitar and get one with CS TSs in it!

The complaints were that you lose the kind of puritan tone a Fender Strat gives you and that the fat 50s just don't get the clean tones you expect (PS I'm quite fond of that clear sound but I haven't tried a guitar with the fat 50s. Recommended or not??)

The Fat 50's my 2012 American Standard have far exceeded my expectations. ZERO regrets on pulling the trigger on the high dollar (to me) purchase.

I just tried an Am Standard with Fat '50s yesterday at my local guitar shop.....LOVED them!

Very clear, with just the right "quack", especially in the 4 position.

Do any of 2013 Strats even feature American Standard pickups? I had a set in my honey burst special, and preferred the sound of that guitar over an american standard with the fat 50s. I liked the fat 50s in the short time I played them.. but the honeyburst strat sounded better acoustically... I had already ordered a set of Don Mare's formvar 60s so I chose the honeyburst as it was significantly cheaper with the christmas specials guitar center was running.

No there are no new American Standard Strats that feature the standard strat pickups so I bought a mint-condition older model.... I need to say, I haven't regretted it for a moment!!

I doubt I'll ever take the Mare pickups out of my strat, but admittedly do enjoy the American Standard pickup s enough to keep em around till I can place them in another strat.

Here's another Dude who knew the Honeyburst Special has American Standard pups... must not have bought yours from GC!
