Well after 15 years using Ibanez electrics I fell in love with a Highway One Strat HSS.

Straight out of the box it played and sounded great and I love the oversize headstock and the classic meets modern looks.

1 month later and I am extremely disturbed to find serious wearing on some of the contact points and the finish on the upper horn has become streaked. And I haven't even gigged it yet, just a few rehearsals and one recording session.

Now I realise that the Highway One's have a thinner finish which (to quote the marketing blurb) "lets the body wood's natural tone shine through" but there is no mention of it wearing out in 5 mins.

Can this be right?! I have paid £500 for a guitar that looks worse after a month than my 10+ year old (and much cheaper) RGs? Or have I got a faulty axe?

Comments / advice appreciated (and apologies my first post had to be a negative one)

Ben

NO! that's okay, Nitro finish wears off quite quickly. It gives that vintage look to the guitar.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad it's not just mine though still a little surprised by how quickly it has happened. I've read a fair few user reviews this evening and pretty much all of them so the finish isn't very durable and that is how it is supposed to be - guess maybe I should have read them *before* lol.

On the plus side I am extremely pleased with the tone and playability of the instrument.

...and soon it'll look like a well used road warrior. I just love that look.

I'm an Ibanez player too. I have 2 SZ's but I definitely prefer my Highway Ones.

The finish, or lack there of was one of the main reasons I bought my Highway 1.

The same reason I bought my vintage mahogany LP. No finish, great Burstbucker Pro pups. Don't know why anyone would buy a $2,000 standard when the $800 one does the trick just as well.

No disrespect but I have to agree with all of the other HW1 owners... Fender pretty clearly states what the finish is and is not. I don't feel that you have a right to be upset. Just my opinion.

I have a '62 Vintage Hot Rod Strat that has a nitro finish. It does wear easily but man, tone for days! Plus it looks better when a little worn. Those poly finishes don't wear at all and mask the woods natural resonance.

Hello everybody, I have just bought one of the new Highway one strats, and I must say the finish is not as good as my old strat that got nicked! but does it sound better after playing it in for a while? not over impressed with it out of the box,but I think it will grow on me.

Polish it and it will shine up but still have that kind of thin transparent finish. Wine transparent looks really good with a shine on it because the wood really shows through. I never polished it either. When I bought it, GC's salesguy did a quick polish and cleaning, and then playing buffed much of the guitar out. When I got new pickups a couple of months ago, a little more polish brought it out to an even more glossy look. I can't keep the satin finish because playing buffs it out. Nothings wearing out though. I mean, it's got plenty of paint on it, but it's just buffed out into a shine.
