I'm thinking of doing a build and using Warmoth neck and body. I'm wondering if anyone has used their chambered body. Since my solid Strat isn't all that heavy, I probably won't go for a chambered, but I wouldn't mind hearing any first hand experience on the sound of them. For the record I have one guitar of each, hollow, semi-hollow, chambered and two solid bodies. They all have their place in the scheme of things. I had never heard of a chambered Strat and I was surprised they were offered.

Not an owner, but have played one and I liked the sound, feel,
finish and weight.

Hi Drew: various companies have been doing chambered Strat-style bodies for many years. I don't know who came up with it first, but James Tyler was certainly an early adopter. His approach is to cut the body blank in half, front and back, route the innards out allowing for the forearm contour in one half and the tummy cut in the other, and then stick the two pieces back together again.

Other people do all the carving from the front and then glue a drop-top facing onto it, curving downwards into the forearm contour.

Different makers do a variety of chambered shapes inside. I seem to recall that Warmoth have a series of cells with rather complicated shapes, whereas Tyler has fewer, larger compartments. Others just do two large hollow cavities either side of the solid centre, very much like a Thinline Tele. Some of them make claims for tonal reasons for their chamber patterns but I suspect it has much more to do with the practicalities of driving router cutters around at the different depths the contouring of a Strat body necessitates.

All of this is murder to accomplish by traditional methods of guitar building (I just happen to know...) but simplicity itself using modern CNC machining. So it has long seemed to me rather surprising that Fender have never got on the chambered Strat bandwagon and are letting others steal a march on them. To be sure, chambering appeals to a minority of players but I think it's a feature that's proven itself and is here to stay: as Miami Mike says, it's nice for several reasons.

And nowadays even Gibson do chambered bodies on their Standard Les Pauls. C'mon, Fender!

Perhaps their logic is that if a player wants a chambered Fender he can buy a Thinline Tele? Hmm.

Cheers - C

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad to see the opinions weren't negative. My LP Faded is chambered and I love it. EVERY time I take that guitar out of the house to play I get compliments on how good it sounds. Yet, there are a lot of guys that knock any chambered LP, mainly because they're ignorant. I probably won't go for a chambered Strat body for this build, but I was curious when I saw they existed and haven't ruled it out completely. When I start this little project, I'll post all the details, with pictures.
