I just picked up a new Fender American Special Stratocaster in Surf Green. Love it. I noticed that the tremelo bridge comes off the body more than a little. Is this standard? What is the procedure for returning it flush with the body? Can I loosen or tighten the springs in the back of the guitar? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Pic included.

Hi sanchezj,

That isn't too far off. You can tighten the two trem-claw screws in the back to bring the bridge closer to the body and re-tune. The specs say 1/8" gap between the back of the bridge and body, but you can set it to wherever you like.

thanks for the tip. If I'm not sacrificing much sustain by having it off the body maybe I'll keep it set the way it is. My high school spanish has long faded despite my name no Habla.

I'm jealous! Where did you get your Surf Green American Special? I know it exists but could not actually find one available for sale anywhere... had to order the Candy Apple Red which was my second choice!

Either add a tremolo spring or tighten the tremolo claws a little... That should help.

Thanks for the great input. I got my surf green american special here in NYC at Sam Ash. I have seen them at Guitar Center and J&R Music as well. All have websites that indicate whats in stock and can be shipped. Enjoy!!!

GC doesn't even list the Surf Green...

Sanchez, enjoy the guitar but go back to Sam Ash and make them give you a price adjustment for the Fender Spring Break promo... these beauties are on sale $200 off thru the end of March! Sam Ash will have to honor the new price since you are still within your return period!
