You know I have found that some of the Korean stuff if you change out the stuff you mentioned, is actually quit good. Korean Epiphones Ibanez and Fender stuff seem to be real nice they are just givin subpar hardware and electronics.

I've found the same to be true in my experience as well. This Korean Strat is very well built. A lot of attention was paid to fit and finish and wood selection. I'd rank it above a typical MIM. Maybe even on par with a CIJ. People boo me and sometimes get a little pissy when I say the following but I remain absolutely immovable in my opinion that my Epiphone Les Paul is built better than any Gibson Les Paul I've ever owned. The pickups and pots were shyte but I swapped them out almost immediately and even with that extra expense I still figure I saved almost $2K compared to paying for a flame top with the Gibson name and I ended up with a better guitar in the end.

It seemed like a lot of players figured that out I did. I took a Korean Epiphone Standard and replaced the Machine Heads Bridge Tailpiece Pickups and Electronics and had a great guitar so great in fact its still with the band. The other guitarist now plays it.
I think Gibson figured that out also and thats why they switched to china and Indonesia.
The Gibson quality has really went up though my 2012 and 2013 are far better than the older ones.
I have always been a Strat Les Paul guy. Like Waddy Wachtel lol.

I always related to him because of that.

Nancy Wilson of Heart.
The story goes she bought the Epi and played it on stage that evening.

I knew she was backing them I had heard that.

I went into guitar center I had a Junker studio les paul and the peghead broke so I decided to sell a 357 SW I had and get a Epiphone ( I never shot the gun once and played every day it was a no brainer). I went into guitar center and played everyone one on the wall. I noticed they were all Chinese instead of Korean I was discouraged and about to leave when I saw one black standard way up at the top.
I hadnt played yet I was like whats that can you get it down for me? It said made in Korea and I hooked it up it actually sounded like an old Les Paul and the strings had that feel across the neck like someone shot it with WD40. I left with it, already had a case.
Today the other guitarist and my BFF since we were 15 has it :)

Sorry to hijack this thread, but since we're talking loaded pickguards, does anyone know if the MIM Standard SSS is routed for a humbucker in the bridge?

Thanks!

It varies from model to model but I believe the normal rule of thumbs is:
MIA Standards and Deluxes are routed HSH
MIM Standards and Deluxes are routed HSS

The only way to know for sure is to remove your pickguard and look for yourself. That said, even if it is routed SSS you still have humbucker options. Several pickup manufacturers like Duncan and Dimarzio make a few bridge humbuckers that will fit right into the single coil slot on your pickguard. Don't forget to consider your potentiometer's impedance while pondering your options.

Yes the Mexican standards depending on the year 95 through about 98 had a universal and then they went to same rout as American HSH so you can put any configuration in them. I work on a lot of Mexican strats for people.
