Beginner here, please be gentle. I've a Stratocaster (Mexican) Standard that came strung with nines.

1) I went through a setup video I found on Youtube, but the string action seems like way too much for fast play. After a lot of websurfing I've found a lot of variation of some of the big names (SRV, Clapton, Hendrix) about what weight of strings they use(d) which is kind of puzzling. Looks like Clapton goes light, Hendrix went heavier, and SRV went VERY heavy. I guess most of Clapton's stuff isn't very fast so is that how he gets away with lighter strings, or am I missing something? Yes, I can understand how lighter strings are easier to bend, so I guess that'd be great for slower play. I imagine this is why a lot of musicians travel with multiple guitars, probably strung with different weight strings?

2) Seems like to go to heavier weight strings I'll need a new nut, so I'll have to have it professionally done, yes?

3) As an experiment to try to simulate heavier strings I tried turning my strings up a note and, while I liked the feel, I was surprised to find I had a lot more fret buzz. I'd have thought higher tension would equate to higher freqency and lower amplitude. Not so? Any ideas?

ernie ball light (10's). clapton uses them and a lot of other players too. a proper set up and your good to go. yes, any heavy gauge(11's) or bigger will require a little work on the guitars nuts slots and a truss rod adjustment because of the heavy strings tention also the saddles may need some adjustments as well heavy strings need to be raised some. e.c. guitars have an action at about 1/8 inch. stevie played a higher action. personally i like a high action on all but my e.c. model and my l.p. . good luck.

You can try 0.10s or 0.11s and they MAY fit the nut without filing.
If not...learn to file?

I find you can easily change gauge +/- 0.02 (on the high end) +/- 0.06 on the low end and not have to tinker with the nut.
Action and intonation may need to be tweaked.
