I have a 2001 American strat and a 2002 MIM strat. I was just noticing how much larger thee frets are on the American. They're quite large... Is this normal? Or do you think it's been re-fretted? I bought it used.

Thanks,
Sean

The MIA Strats with vintage frets are the re-issues. Your guitar is perfectly normal.

The American strat has medium jumbo frets (since the 80's and to date)

I believe the MIM strats used vintage frets until 2006 when they switched to medium jumbo frets as well.

In short, your observation is correct, the USA strat has larger frets, and yes it's normal for the years that you'd stated.

The MIM Classic Series '50s, '60s, and '70s Strats remain fretted with vintage-size wire. The Classic Player's models feature medium jumbo frets.

I repeat, in 2001 & 2002, the American standard strats had medium jumbo frets, and the MIM standard strats had vintage frets.

Retro's posts are correct, but not relevant to the question.
I believe in 2002, all MIM strats had vintage fret wire (and 6 screw bridge). The difference in the vintage reissues at that time in the MIM strats was the radius (7.25 as opposed to 9.5), as well as a few other differences (trussrod access location, pickguard holes, etc.).
