I was playing with setting up the floating bridge on my strat.
I'd get what I thought was the correct adjustments, but when I'd raise the pitch with the bar, one or two springs would fall off. I messed with it for hours with no better luck. Until, that is, I just removed the center spring. Everything seemed to fall into line after that.
Is it possible I needed to do that because I use a pretty light gauge strings?
I use EB cobalt, .009 -.042
Or, is it more likely my springs aren't matched?

While I'm at it, some folks don't like the floating bridge idea because they say the guitar goes out of tune easily. I don't seem to have that problem. Generally I tune it when I pick it up, and check it when I put it away. No matter how much I use the bar, it stays pretty much in tune.
For those that do have a problem with holding tune, does it go out of tune quickly, as in before the song is over?

09-42s are light and as you found out you don't need all five springs. It is not that the springs are matched or unmatched, you just don't need that much tension (what the springs provide) to counteract and provide the balance needed to your fulcrum (tremelo).

As for your question about tuning stability, that will depend on how much you use the tremelo and how violently you use it.

+1 on all counts.

All of my trem-equipped Strats are configured with three springs arranged in a modified "Y".

I don't go out of tune.
I have five springs, although mine came with three.

I used Raw Vintage which are softer.
I'd like to see the angle of the pin end...sounds like it's bent or maybe the holes into the block?

On the 6 Screw bridge, I tried 5 Regular Strat springs, then 4. The trem was way to hard to use IMO. Reverted back to 3 springs. 3 Has a much nicer feel. I normally use 10's.
