So I installed the Clapton mid boost in my 1990 American Strat Plus with Gold Lace Sensors, LOVE the sounds I am getting.

However when I did the upgrade I also installed what I was told is an official Fender White Pearl Koa pickguard. Looks awesome, I always wanted a pearl pickguard and this one did not disappoint.

One thing I noticed is that on the original pickguard it has "shielding" across the whole back ( looks like tinfoil glued to the back side. This replacement pickguard only has it near the controls.

When I fingerpick I rest my pinky on the pickguard, when I do this I hear a slight popping sound. If I rub my finger in that spot I hear a crackling. It is REALLY noticeable at volume.

Has anyone ever encountered this before? Is it a result of the material the pick guard is made of? Can it be "fixed" by gluing some tinfoil on the back as shielding?

Any help is appreciated.

Dude, just static I reckon.

For a temporary fix, you could try using tumble dryer sheets like bounce* and just giving the PG a bit of a rub - I can't vouch for this working, but have heard tell it does.

To fix it properly, I'd suggest popping the PG off again and shielding the whole of it - tinfoil should do the trick just fine.

Either that, or you've got a bit of David Blaine stuck under there while you were changing it - that can be very very annoying, creepy, and much more difficult to get rid of without a wizard and at least two exorcists:

Thanks, that is pretty much what I figured but thought I would get a second opinion. Guess I will pull it apart when I get home.

More to come

I'd put new shielding tape on the complete back of the pickguard. I've also had to add shielding paint or tape to the cavities before to stop it completely, plus do a star ground. make sure that the shielding tape makes contact with the cavities shielding too, if they don't it's not encapsulated and it can actually make it worse.

What you are hearing is static electricty. You need to sheild the pickgaurd. The body should already be sheilded. A Fender pickgaurd should also have sheilding on the back. I sheild all of my non Fender Stratocasters (G&L Legacy), and my Gibson SG.http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electronics ... lding.html

Here is a pic of the pickgaurd I removed from my 2011 American Standard Stratocaster. You can see in the pic that the pickups and controls are sheilded.

Shiels is required . Do you buy a aftermarket pickgard or Fender ?

I won't use copper shield , I don't like the look for the guitar body , even if you don't see it with pickgard. Guitar loose is original look .
I'd use conductive balck paint like Fender use often. Avalaible at Stew macDonald.

But it is more expensive than copper shield

Copper shied good for the pickgard.

I often use both method ; copper and black paint . My choice Black paint

Why does it matter what it looks like under the pick guard? I've used both copper and aluminum tape and both seem to do just fine. I do like the copper a little better because it's a better conductor and it looks cool!

Any opinion is good, it is a matter of taste. I do both and see both and I don't like copper look .

I like using the copper sheilding tape because it is easy to remove. Also easy to install. The body of my G&L Legacy has numbers and instructions writen on it. Someone may want to see this later on. The copper sheilding tape can be pulled off but the paint would have to be scrapped out.

This Legacy body says 2 Tone body, maple neck, cream covers and knobs, 1 ply pick gaurd. Old Fenders have the same kind of writing.
