I've got a quick question for you more knowledgable Strat guys. I've got a 99 American Deluxe Strat bought new that I've always loved except for the Fender Noiseless (Toneless) pickups. Back in the day I had a 70 Strat that sounded great. I wanted to get as close as possible to that tone with my '99. So I installed a full set of CS69's, added a neck on switch and wired in a .047uf capacitor. It sounds MUCH better now but not quite the way I want it. I understand that the higher the capacitance, the darker the overall tone. So I went to the Fender sight and found that on the wiring for the '70's Strat, Fender is using a .1uf cap. In all the other diagrams I checked out they are using either a .022 or .047 cap. Is this due to the '69's being wound for a scooped midrange and/or the middle p/up not being reverse wound? Just curious. Any info would be appreciated.

IMO you can't have same tone with your 1999 Strat .

A 1970 Strat is a better guitar.

If I remember right Fender only used the .1 caps in the first year or part of the year in 54.

I really can't comment on all the '70's era Strats, I'm sure a lot of them are great guitars, but I can say that my '99 is a much better quality guitar then my '70. I bought the '70 new and within one month the neck got a twist/warp. The upper strings went dead at the base of the neck and the lower strings went dead at the top. I took it back to the dealer figuring they would replace the neck under warranty. Fender (read CBS) said to straighten the neck, which they did. Two weeks later, same thing. They straightened it again. Two weeks later, same thing again. This time the dealer, who was a stand up guy, refunded my money and sold my '61 Les Paul (SG) trade in back to me for what I traded it in for. This tee'd me off so much at Fender that until I bought my '99 I never bought another one of their guitars. The one thing I liked about the '70 is that it sounded GREAT. The only thing I didn't like about the '99 is it's lack of tone. The CS '69's are a vast improvement over the Noiseless units. I also realize that I had the '70 over forty years ago, I'm using a different amp, etc., etc. No to mention that all guitars sound somewhat different. I'm just trying to close to that tone. I feel I'm about 90% there now, but you know "The Quest for Tone" goes on forever. Think Jimi Hendrix, "The Wind Cries Mary". In closing, from what I've seen, the guitars that Fender is making now are as good as anything they've ever made. Oh yeah, thanks to the other guys for the info. As I've said I got my info from Fender's websight on the "70's Strat" which may or may not be the same as my old guitar. That's why I did this post. Thanks again for the replies.
