OK Guys,
Many of you may be pissed that in this economy I have the opportunity to expand my holdings...but try to show some love anyway.

I currently have two guitars. 1) My number one, a 2007 American Custom Strat which I Love, Love, Love...I'm mainly a blues guy. 2) A Sunburst Epiphone Les Paul Ultra that is set up and plays much better than many Gibsons I've played. I'm playing through a Fender FM212R.

The Les Paul wants to go. Should I :

1) Trade it in towards a Fender Blues Deluxe and only have one guitar (will I really notice a difference)?

2) Trade towards an American Telecaster (wanting to install a humbucker in the neck position eventually to try and emulate a little Les Paul Growl), and continue to play both through the FM212.

All opinions are welcome...I'll probably make a decision by the end of this weekend!!!

Thanks in advance,
Bob

Wow tough choice. A nice tube amp (a necessity in my book) or a second guitar.

You've already got an amp.

It's solid state so it probably won't be breaking down anytime soon.

If for some reason you find your guitar needs repair you'll be without a guitar which sucks.

I'd go for the Tele and then start saving for the nice tube amp.

I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. A good friend I jam with, and even played in jams with....Plays through a Fender 212R. When we put the two amps together.......My Hot Rod sounds so much better (even by his admission). I'm no expert, by any means........but I know what my ears tell me. My Hot Rod is a tube amp.....so I'm thinking that is where the difference is.

I'm not telling you to buy MY amp.......but I would seriously think about going tube VS solid state. Especially since you have such a quality guitar. Go try out some Tube amps, VS what you have now.......let your ears do the talking to you.

Hello Bobandshawn,

I'd start by playing that strat through
many amps see how you feel about the
differance your getting. If nothings really
grabbing you then get the tele.

Cheers.

Some people will shout at me for this but I think almost any tube amp is better than almost any solid state one. Moving to a good tube amp after an ordinary (no insult intended) transistor one is like getting behind the wheel of a Lotus Esprit when you've only driven family station wagons before (I know whereof I speak...). And the amp in question would make you feel like you'd plugged your guitar into an F-16 with the afterburners flat out!

On the other hand, to give up a nice-playing Les Paul is something hard. If I had to save just one guitar from a burning building it would be my favourite US Strat; but I must admit, switching between that and my LP, not to mention various others, keeps my playing of all of them sharper. When you are on the Strat you have a better feel for what you want from it, and don't waste time trying to get it to do things another instrument is better suited to. I say this after reading the endless post on this site along the lines of "how can I make my Strat sound more like a [insert guitar type here]".

I think, guitar-wise, you always want to be broadening your palette, not narrowing it.

Not helpful, eh?

Is there anything else you could sell to buy the amp without loosing the Paul?

And then get the Tele too?

First - let me thank everyone for their opinions. After long deliberation I went with a brand new Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and it sounds much different than the FM212R! My thinking was to really develop my own "sound" using my favorite Axe and a great tube amp. I'll spend some time developing this relationship and see where it leads in regards to what void a new guitar could fill in the future.

Thanks again for the help!

Bob

Ah... Tell us how you like that Hot Rod Deluxe. What did it feel like, the very first time you plugged in?

Sweet or what?

Good luck!

Modeling and emulating amps seem to have a bit of a delay to the sound and also a bit of a high end squeel that I don't like.

Recommendation for a good valve amp is good advise.

Hope you don't mind me chiming in on this one. I went to my local store years ago looking for a smaller amp to gig in small clubs and played tons of them. this was back in 1997 the Hot rod deluxes were'nt even in production for a full year yet and the dealer had one. I narrowed it down to an Ampeg another marhsal and the deluxe. The deluxe had a more distinctive tone and vibe to it that I had to leave with it and here we are ten years later and it is still one of my favorites. I sold alot of equipment before I got married and I could not let it go no matter what it is a fantiastic amp for the price and a good work horse.

I have a few guitars, including 2 strats and an Epi LP. IMO there is nothing better than a strat plugged into my Blues Deluxe. I was in GC Sunday and everyone in there was playing through as many effects they could get there hands on (sounded like cr@p). I pulled down a new 2008 American Standard Strat and plugged straight into a Blues Deluxe (what a novel idea) just a little reverb tweak the EQ and it was Tone heaven.
P.S. I am now the proud owner of a 3 Tone Sunburst 2008 AM standard.

Congratulations on the new Strat. Also it’s funny how you mentioned that. I was reading an interview with Lenny Kravits the other day and he was talking about his new album and how people would ask him what effects he used on a track and he said the guitar plugged into a Fender deluxe. Pure and Simple

I wouldn't trade it, I'd sell it privately. You never get what it's worth on a trade.
