Awesome guitar and unbelievable clean condition. Looks like it has an alder body.
If you ever want to pull the neck you´ll know the date of production.
Great score!

All the best,
Robin

JamGuy - what a very cool "time capsule" Strat! It's incredibly clean for a circa 1981; my 19-year-old self would have been quite jealous as that's what I wanted back in 1981. Sorry that I can't help you on that 12th fret finish - I wonder if maybe that neck had a finish issue on the 12th fret that was caught at the factory, but they wound up just quickly shooting that fret with nitro when they shot the headstock after adding the decals.

I'm going on memory here, but I don't believe there was anything unique going on with the basic Stratocaster of 1981 - it would have been pretty much the same specs as for 1979 or 1980. For example I don't believe this one would have had the hotter X-1 bridge pickup; that was on the Lead II and "The STRAT" back then but didn't make it to the basic Stratocaster until the 1982 Smith Strats. However, since this one was gifted on Christmas 1981 it could well be a late year model, and with Fender you never know, and there was some overlap between the last of the big headstocks and the Smiths.

Regarding the serial numbers - I think the issue was that Fender neglected to change the "S9" to "E0" when they reordered the decals in 1980 (and they did the same thing in 1981) so I don't know if they ran them up to "S9 99999".
