I apologize if this has been asked before, but I have searched high and low and haven't found a definitive answer.

My 1982 Dan Smith Strat has the thinnest neck I have ever felt and I love it. But since I've never felt another one like it, what would I tell the Custom Shop if I wanted one to these precise specs? It doesn't feel like any of the standard profiles I've played (U, C, V, etc.).

Anyone have any ideas or where I could direct my question?

Thanks in advance!!

I own a '79 Strat with a pretty thin neck, so I would go with whatever shaped necks of the late '70s and early '80s were.

I hope this helps.

My guess it would be a MIJ made neck, as they really made some thin necks in the 80's, and i have one, feels great, and a flatter radius than normal. as for specs, you got me.

And your guess would be wrong. The "Smith Strats" were produced BEFORE Fender entered into thier deal with Fender Japan. Do some homework...there are great books out there that detail the true smith strats (not the lame two knob jobs, THOSE are not what are considered "Smith Strats").

To the OP...the Smith Strats that I have seen and played all seem to have the thin U shape but a small U shape.

My one: E212798, proper 3 knob Dan smith maple neck strat built Dec 1982. 4 bolt neck, small headstock, 70s logo.

The neck is 0.815" at 1st fret and 0.866" at 12th fret. It has vintage frets and a 7.5" radius with a 1.65" nut width.

Fender make NOTHING like it these days. Which is a bit of a shame. It's a shallow V, not much meat in the shoulders to the point that its almost sharp edged. You can play it thumb over like a 50s V neck or thumb behind using all 4 fingers - ie blues or rock very versatile.

I'm planning a Partsocaster build over the next couple of years and finding a similar neck is proving a bit tricky. I may well go for a USAGC Clapton style neck but slimmer, say 0.820" at the 1st fret.

I think Jimmikatt was meaning that maybe one of the MIJs would come closer to the Smith Strat neck shape than any current USA Fender, not that the Smith Strat necks were made in Japan.

I do agree with everyone that those were pretty unique necks.

Nikininja reshaped a neck he had. And of course, Ceri makes necks.

You might be able to have the Custom Shop reproduce that neck for you on a build order for a new guitar, by sending the neck to them, but I fear that's the only way they would do such a job for you.
See if you can find a Gilmour somewhere and see if that neck comes close. If so, you might be able to procure one on Ebay or from the 'unmentionable'.

If you go the Custom Shop route, for them to duplicate a sent in neck is an upcharge, just as a piece of knowledge...

These days, with their pricing the way it is, I'm reminded of a chat I had with my son regarding his new Jeep Grand Laredo SRT. In response to my comment about the gas mileage, he said "If you're afraid of doing the time, don't commit the crime."

Not sure if you watch how they make necks at Fender. But they are machine manufactured and the hand finished. When I saw the belt sander they use for finishing the wood I thought, "Wow, no wonder these neck vary! If sanded just a little more than the last neck, it will be thinner for sure." I see this on the Plus necks. They are all pretty much the same but then you get one that is a bit thinner than the rest. I just guessed it was hand finished and sanded more then normal, maybe to remove some anomaly or something. A friend of mine has a mint Smith Strat, with the 4 bold neck plate (think a E3 serial number???). The guitar played like a dream and the neck was thinner than the newer American Standard Strats that came out in 1986-7.
