I'm wanting to sell my MIM Standard Strat, but I don't know how much to ask for it. Does anyone here have some suggestion for a beginning figure?

The instrument has had no modifications, all original parts, normal wear for a non gigging instrument and comes with a deluxe gig bag. Purchased in 1996 (serial # is MN5+6 digits).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If pics are needed to make an even further evaluation, I'll be happy to post them.

Hi bjones1972,

To get a good indication of what these guitars are going for currently, check the completed listings on eBay. Forget the price that anyone is asking, see the actual sold prices.

Probably at best, around $250 to $300, depending on condition and color.

A lot of it really depends on where you live. For the most part here in the US and particularly here in Northern Ohio, it's pretty much a buyers market...used MIM Standards aren't really going for much. My local Guitar Center currently has a nice used one for $329 and they recently sold another for $300. I've also seen them going locally on Craiglist for as little as $225 to $250.

As shim said there, check Ebay and such to see what they're going for but the $250 to $300 range sounds just about right depending on your local market. If you are planning to put it on Craiglist, maybe go a bit higher to allow people a chance to chew ya down a bit.

That said...you wouldn't happen to be any where near the Cleveland area by chance? I happen to be the market for a '96 Standard in Lake Placid Blue. Recently had to part with mine over some family issues so now I'm looking for a replacement.

Peace,
Jim

Run the serial number of your Stratocaster by Fender Customer service. Get all the specific details. If its just a run of the mill Strat, $300 is the best you'll get for a near dead mint model in the US market. There were a lot of odd ducks back then, such as my '96 Tex-Mex Strat which was the precursor to the Fender Jimmy Vaughan Strat. I didn't realize it was a special model except for the faint V-neck profile and vintage style tuners. Seemed like a regular Stratocaster to me.

Also, I don't care what anyone says, any used guitar dealer will tell you, a guitar isn't worth more because you modified it or did any upgrades. Used guitar buyers may change whatever you did to the guitar. So my point is when selling a guitar, put it back to stock before you sell it. You'll get the same amount for it.

(Disregard the above statement if its a vintage piece though, they lose value when modified!)

I've seen mexican strats in good condition sell for $350.00 most times in my neck of the woods at stores.

When the local Music-Go-Round is selling MIM Strat (and Teles) for under $300, that tells me something. I've bought as low as $239 at M-G-R and that guitar (don't think they knew it) had a set of Kent Armstrong SSH pickups in it and rocked! He who said that it's a buyer's market right now was dead on.
