Man, I hate that, one asks a question, 50 none answers. I created an account just because reading this was making me crazy. NO, they were not clay, they were a white vulcanized celluloid plastic, as in white, that aged many times to varying degrees to look like the color of brown clay.
My 64 tele neck was butchered by some guy that put trapezoid peril inlays in the neck, I dug them out and anywhere a marker is left, after I scraped them, they are a dull white.
I ended up here just because I was looking around to see if they can still be had, evidently not, not the originals anyway, just imitations from stewmac etc.
