The new American Vintage 59 Stratocaster - They're obviously darker but I've been wanting to know if the dots on these Strats are clay dots or what?

Thanks!

Yep, the specs of that guitar are period correct (except the five-way selector and modern wiring scheme) including the clay dot inlays on the slab rosewood fingerboard...

Can you point me in the direction where you read that they are the real clay dots? Perhaps you heard it from a Fender rep? I'm asking because I haven't seen anywhere where they have stated that they are clay dots.

Thanks!

The rosewood fretboard with the clay dot markers was introduced in late 1959.

The new '59 reissues are exact reproductions of an early 1959 maple-neck Strat and the aforementioned guitar which was introduced lately that year.

Here's a picture of the late '59 Strat showing the new rosewood fretboard with the clay dots.

Ahh ok. So there's nowhere stating if they're real clay dots or if they're just clay colored, but not real clay.

I realize that it says it's an exact reproduction of the 59 model, but the possibily still remains that they're not real clay dots. I hope they are, but not too sure unless someone knows positively.

I played one in a store the other day and with the little time I had with it, I examined the dots. They're colored, obviously, but I didn't see the clay texture and the fine lines that are common in the clay dots.

Provide such details which shaped her on a strat, except collectors who know the value of such information to raise the price?

If you're joined at the hip with clay dots, buy a vintage '59 Strat and be done with it.

Pearloid, clay, or even Play-Doh......it doesn't matter. The AVS '59 is one helluva fine replica and the composition of the fretboard markers won't matter one iota to the lion's share of guitarists interested in owning one.

The clay dots aren't a deciding factor. I decided I wanted a 59 long ago, as soon as I can afford it.

The clay dots are just something I want to know about the guitar. I want to know everything about the guitar. The dots are the only mystery left right now. Small detail? Maybe. But I'm a vintage purist and my heart yearns to know

Clay dots? if you're such a purist, why aren't you worried about the modern wiring and the 5 way switch?

I doubt they are clay.

I almost don't know how to respond to this. I'll just leave it up to you to decide why we prefer a 5 way switch and the tone control wired to the bridge

When I say "purist", I don't mean I have to have a tele just like before Leo was putting truss rods in them.

I'm a purist when it comes to looks and feel. Electronics can be switched over and over, and easily.

I can appreciate and empathize with that.

For me it's the details like "real" Kluson single-line tuners, the serial number stamped on the neck plate, and bridges saddles marked "PATENT PENDING".

Seriously though, I doubt that the fret markers on these reproductions are real clay -- more likely some modern synthetic intended to visually replicate the prototype. I wouldn't be dissuaded from buying one of those guitars based solely on that. I'm just tickled that they finally got the string tree located where it belongs.

I know what ya mean man there are certain things I want because of my first original 76 Strat and things I want changed.
I want a humbucker at the bridge because I installed one
I want a 5 way because the used one I bought had one installed.
I want locking tuners becuse I remember taking a drill to it putting in schallers
I want a bridge that stays in tune better than a six screw like a two point or blade runner.
I want a 22nd fret

I want all this on my 70s strat.
I found most of it minus the bridge in the Highway 1s and American Special series

I have only found fender made one strat that was close to what I thought the perfect strat would be.
Its $4000 and discontinued

I thought "clay" dots weren't really clay at all...I thought they were just called "clay dots" cause they looked like clay. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I read that in a book about vintage Fender's. Maybe the information was incorrect, I dunno.
