Just as an aside, we have, on several occasions compared inflation adjusted pricing in comparing current costs to 1958 when I first laid eyes and hands on a Stratocaster. With the exception of non-trem and hardtail versions, there was only one model, sunbursts and a couple of custom colors. It turned out that the current MSRP is about the same, adjusted for inflation, as it was back then. $691 US is a killer deal for an American Standard these days considering the new specs on the guitar.

I thought $691 was a decent deal
I really did not want a Strat but thought it was a decent buy.
Looking at the prices now I am glad I bought one even if I have not used the strat
in awhile..JT

Be on the lookout for coupons, festive discounts (Black Friday, Cyber Monday) and rebate schemes (Fender has its own). You'll get a good deal if you use them or buy at the right time. The American Special Strat costs as much as $1150-1280 here in my city- but during the festive season (which was a little before Thanksgiving), a dealer who offers the lowest prices, sold it at $1010. Price inflation is a sale killer, where I live- not so here. Besides, if you want an American Standard Strat and not necessarily a new one, get it used. Plenty saved there. Obvious information, but still, if you want to save, wait and watch.

Amazing. Just how did you pull that one off?

Many will say that Music123,MF and others are not surposed to price match HelloMusic, but they do if you keep calling and get a different salesperson........JT

I bought a new 73 Stratocaster in 74 (only one model available at that time) for like $300 or $350. I think if you do the research that probably comes to like $2000 in today's money. Just to put a little perspective on this. I believe, considering inflation, that the price may have actually dropped over the years (and the quality of today's Strats, I think, is pretty good.

Bought my first strat (3 color sunburst) in 63. As best I recall, seems I paid about $375, and that was with hard case. Last year, on Mother's day, I bought a 2 color sunburst, American Special, at GC, for $749, with their discount. It seems, considering the value of today's $$, a better value in 2012 in comparison to 1963.
