Guy:

I just bought a 2006 American Series Strat.

Anyway, I wanted to ask you a technical question: Last night, I happened to rest my fingertips on the pickguard, in the area of the tone pots, and I felt an “electrical“ vibration coming from under the pickguard. I know the Strat American Series has a Delta tone circuit, which translates to a hotter bridge pickup and a rear tone pot with a clickable “no load” position, but I never used it. I don’t think the vibration is normal. Do you know what could be causing the vibration? How would I fix it?

Thanks for any help.

Ray

We're talking about the kind of fingertip electrical vibration you can sometimes feel on the side of a refrigerator, is that right? That appears to be normal with fridges and I guess therefore not harmful with them.

However, it is distinctly abnormal in a guitar. Bear in mind that the guitar pickups are generators of a tiny amount of electric current, which they feed to the amplifier. There is nowhere from which current should be entering the instrument. So what is producing that tactile sensation you are detecting?

I might be completely wrong, within which case no problem. But I'd be seriously worried by this issue and would want to get it checked out by someone properly qualified - before plugging the guitar in again.

Every year musicians get hurt and even killed by earthing faults with stage gear. Don't be one of them.

Unless someone here knows better - ?

My recommendation is to have the guitar completely checked out by a guitar tech.
