I have a mid 80's MIJ and the 5-way switch is noisy in spots 1,3,5 and clear in spots 2 & 4.
Is there a way to fix this ? should I just replace it ?
thanks.

Spray some contact cleaner on the electrical contacts, rattle the switch back and forth a few times, repeat as necessary.

Contact cleaner spray can work wonders bringing crackly pots and switches back to life, even when you might think they need replacing.

Sounds normal to me and maybe not the switch, as positions 2 and 4 are noise cancelling positions, whereas 1, 3 and 5 are not. Are you talking about a scratchy sound when switching, or that you have noise in positions 1, 3 and 5? The latter being normal.

Yep, position 2 is the combination of bridge pup and middle pup, and position 4 is the combination of the middle pup and the neck pup, and both positions are noise-cancelling in any Strat with a RWRP (reverse-wound, reverse-polarity) middle pup. It's normal to have a hum or buzz sound in positions 1, 3 and 5 on a Strat and it's just the nature of most single coil pups. The position of guitar in relation to the amp, or lights, or computer, or just about any other electrical device can make the noise worse. Most times, just moving farther away from the amp can reduce the noise, and some amps will have more noise than others when using single-coil pups. Some people live with it, some switch to noiseless single-coil pups, or hum-bucker pups so as not to have this noise.
