+1

It's sure got me stumped. And subsequent string issues with the backup guitar on the same night merely adds fuel to the mystery.

(cue "Twilight Zone" theme song......)

Guys...no foolin' that was my Friday...5 high E strings, 3 slipping and 2 breaking over 2 different Strats. I"ve barely broken 5 E strings combined since 1975. Freaky and massively annoying.

Today is a new day and I'm slowly beating off my gig headache and will prepare to figure out what's going on. Gonna switch from my old EBSS to some Mangans.

I should clarify, I don't string every 2 days, but every 2 gigs. But if I'm on a run of 10 gigs, then it would be every 2 days for that time period. If I just play a weekend, then I use a set of strings for both Friday/Saturday, then I string again for my Sunday gig.

You need to wrap it around the post differently... That tuning machine head, if its the split vintage style, maybe you're new to them? The have used them since the 60's on standard production models...

I've been regularly stringing the vintage split post keys since 1975...not new to them at all.

Man I hope it's not a Gulf coast thing...I have a gig tonight. Think I better bring a backup strat for tonight just in case.

I picked up some new strings today and got back at it. I cleaned the high E tuning post with some alcohol to get rid of any residual nut lube, and really put the windings to it. Got the 65 AVRI Strat to tune to pitch and keep the string on the post. The only thing I can figure about yesterday, is that I was in a hurry to get to the gig and just rushed it too much, along with probably having some lube smeared on the post causing the string to pop off so easily.

My Custom Shop 65 ended up having a burr in the high E saddle that somehow decided to creep up on me the same day as the AVRI issues causing a very high E headache kind of day.

I smoothed the saddle hole with a needle file and some 1500 and it is now functioning well.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice. Mysteries solved.

nice to hear. I wonder why this stuff always happens on gig night. Guess it's Murphy. Although I didn't have any string problems tonight, the power supply for my multi-fx peddal crapped out on me 10 min. before my gig. luckily was able to find a bad spot in the wire, and bend it to a good spot and tape it so at least it was useable. I only use it when there's not enough room for my larger pedalboard, and had nothing to back it up, so luckily it all worked out. Must be the Gulf coast after all!
