So I have a 2 month old 65 AVRI Strat that I've restrung probably 30 times since I've had it. I restring every 2 days for gigging purposes. No issues. Tonight I go to re-string and the high E string pops out of the tuner slot when tuned to pitch. OK...I re-load the string and after attempting to get to pitch, it pops out of the tuner again. The string is in the tree as normal.

By now the string end is curly Q'd so I replace with a brand new string. Again it pops loose when trying to get to pitch. It is not breaking....just coming loose.

I've been using the same stringing method for over 35 years and never had this happen more than 3-4 times over the years, usually remedied with a fresh string and an extra wind on the post.

Now I'm getting pissed as I have a gig to make in an hour....I take one last effort by replacing the high E tuning key with a new spare I had on hand.
Got a third E string on and tuned to pitch. Stretched strings OK. Tuned back to pitch and it happened AGAIN!!

Now I gotta grab a spare Strat and haul butt to the gig...but in all my years of playing and teching Strats, I've never had this issue persist over 3 different strings and 2 tuning keys.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???

Is the tuner not holding it position?

Just sounds like to me you need to secure the string a little more, have you tried to wrap the string around itself? This will lock it in place and there's no way it will come off. I usually crimp the string about an inch and stick down in the tuner and put about four winds in the post and All's good.

Good luck!

He's been stringing guitars for 35 years, I think he knows the right way to do it so that's why I'm thinking it's a mechanical issue. I would look very close at the tuner.

Sounds like both of you have only been stringing guitars for 35 minutes.

+1

That's the only possibility that makes any sense.

OK...thanks for the replies. I did actually replace the tuning key with no luck. So I took my old 65 Custom Shop out to the gig. A guitar that I've used on hundreds of gigs with no issues. I broke 3 E strings and ran out of spares so the gig ended an hour early due to me.

I've never seen such weirdness in my life. One guitar won't tune up without popping the string off the post....and my old standard blew 3 strings in less than 30 minutes. I'm chalking it up to a bad batch from Ernie Ball. Tomorrow I will restring with some other brands and see what the hell is going on.

All of this blows my mind because I never break a string on a gig...EVER. My band (who I've had intact for 29 years) was just mystified. After 3 decades of gigs with me, they knew something very bizarre was going on. I forfeited my pay back to the bar for killing their prime-time. This is the Florida Gulf Coast, and the place was packed with tourists ready to party.

This is a very strange problem . There are something you don't see IMO but what ?

Change for another string name ?

One guitar don't keep string in the tuner and the other guitar break string !!!!!

hmmm.....a bad batch of strings??? that would be odd....
You restring every two days??? Even if you played 24 hours a day that is way too much IMO. Maybe you cause some damage to the key. You said you replaced it though. I guess you had a tunning machine head just lying around??

The other guitar breaking 3 high E strings is proabably a burr on the saddle. You seem like a dude who carries a bag of strings around.....Why didnt you just string up a B string in the high E slot. No big deal for one night and would have gotten the gig done.

Come on Kyle, your putting us on. It's simply impossible for a properly wound string to "pop" out even if you stand on it.
