Hello,
I was at guitar center and tried Eric Johnson Strat.
Was very happy with the thick neck.
Great playing on the whole fingerboard and super neck.
But the big hum from the pick-ups was problem for me.
I think the hum was bigger than on American Standard.

After some time I was in another guitar center and there was American Deluxe Strat V-neck which is also soft V-neck.
I liked it, but the neck was thinner and flatter than on Eric Johnson Strat with soft V.
Because the sharper neck profile, my thumb was very over the neck shape (yes, I know. Good for thumb played tones :) )
The modern C neck American Deluxe fits me little better, but EJ was generally far better, especially thick neck.

So the question is simple: is there any Strat with the neck similar to EJ, but with less humming pick-ups ?
Generally, from which year of neck profile is EJ based?
Maybe its interesting the both necks are soft V, but with so much difference (I know EJ is C profile from some position).

Thank you.

The American Vintage '56 Stratocaster has an even thicker soft v neck profile than either the Am Dlx or the EJ. Can't comment on the pick up hum.

And what about Vintage Hot Rod 57?
Maybe Im wrong, but its "flatter soft V".
Flatter means sharper angle V?
Is it thick as EJ?

Hi Smoke...Welcome to the Forums. In general, it helps if one carefully reads the specs of the guitars one is interested in, and then goes out and auditions them as it appears you have done, in part. The EJ neck is unique owing to the cut, the deeper setback of the headstock, the finish, the frets and the radius, all of which will give it a very definite feel which is what he desired. The AmDlx you cite has Fender's standard 'soft V' with medium jumbo frets. The '57 VHR has a feel somewhat between the former, and the vintage C neck {not the current modern C} and has medium jumbo frets. The neck on the new American Vintage is the classic 10/56 V which is a chunkier neck than the others. If you've not played the Clapton guitar yet you will find it to have a very sleek satin finished V-neck. The radius of all these necks except for the EJ is 9.5. I own a Clapton, a '57 VHR, and an AmDlx V-neck. My neck preferences are in that order as well. I also own a Gilmour which has what is referred to as a 57VRI...a classic C neck. A very different feel from the current modern C.

Thank you ZZDoc for the great answer.
I generally prefer on EJ the thickness of the neck, the profile is secondary.
I think EJ is really thicker than American Deluxe V-neck.
Its great that the '57 VHR has the V profile to C.
Dont you know if the '57 VHR has the same "thickness" as American Deluxe V-neck or is it really thick like EJ?

I tried Am. Vintage Reissue 57 and the shape of the neck definitely pushed up to my forefinger.
EJ is to which neck profile closest?

I own both the Dlx and the VHR. The latter is a bit thinner in cross-section. I've not played an EJ in years so I can't offer a first hand comparison. The radius is going to have some effect on feel in that it's a tad flatter.

I own both the Dlx and the VHR. The latter is a bit thinner in cross-section due to a slightly less pronounced V compared to the Dlx. I've not played an EJ in years so I can't offer a first hand comparison. The radius is going to have some effect on feel in that it's a tad flatter.

Today I was trying another Eric Johnson Strat.
Was very, very light and resonant, but one thing looks like not okay to me.
The bad thing is that I forgot how was it at first EJ Strat...

The problem was the thin e string was like very near of the edge of the fretboard and this to be the cause during playing that the thin e string was like sliding on the edge of the fretboard.
Not often, but I sometimes have the feeling during play its on the very edge.

Can someone have this feeling too, or is it normal charateristic of EJ Strat?

I tried then American Vintage 57 and it was little better I think.

Probably a poor neck allignment, this can be corrected easily by releasing the string tension, loosening the 4 mounting bolts of the neck somewhat so you can gently push the neck up somewhat towards the upper horn. Fasten the bolts again and retune. They can probably do it in the store for you, otherwise its an easy job for a guitar tech. Maybe the problem is even simpler and it could be fanned out bridge sadle or the string isn't in the center of the sadle.
