I'm not not sure what "APG" stands for, but I'm a retired 92Y (Supply) SFC. I'm living in Laurel now and play with my church band.

I used to own a '77 Hard Tail Stat just like you black Strat. Hard Tails just sound different to me. I believe it's the springs that make the difference.

Here are the scores (%) thus far

'57/'62s 18
Gold Lace Sensors 6
N3 Noiseless 0
Stock Fender 11

Loved the pups in my friend's original '62 Strat. Don't know about the SCNs, because I have yet to compare them. I would pick some of the others if I was locked in to one or a couple of genres, perhaps.

But, I will give you a thumb up on the N3 Noiseless. Not perfect . . . but, then again nothing is. I believe them to be better than some, maybe the Vintage Noiseless, and maybe even the SCNs? One thing for sure, I think the N3s are presently under valued, and trends in older more established gear tends to have a trump card. Time will tell.

I wanted a variety that works well with each other when combined. The N3s give me Alnico 2, Alnico 3, Alnico 5, and a sweet combo when used together, decent sustain and desired feedback, and they are great for recording purposes.

The next version should be dynOmite! :D

My guitar plays better than me and, sad to say, always will. :(

Believe it or not, my '77 had a 3 way switch. I had to put in a 5 way.

I was active duty for over 20 years. Sorry, but I was never at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. My son had his medical checkups done there (lives in

I was at Ft. Devens, Ft. Campbell (twice), Ft. Lewis, Yong San, S. Korea, Ft. Leavenworth, Recruiting in Manassas, VA., and Ft. Meade.

I just saw the Maryland and assumed. Its such a beautiful place the gulf there I will never forget it.
About the strat
I was just a kid and I listened to the service man explain it to my mother but Im pretty sure it was a 76.
He told us how it was completly rewired etc etc.
All I knew is I wanted to go home and rock.
It was my 16th birthday present.
She told me I could have $500 to get a car or guitar my choice.
I took the Fender Strat that I was looking at at North Kansas City Music.
$450 plus tax about covered the $500 I made sure got some strings etc spent it to the last cent.
I do know it had a 5 way and I remember older guys telling me how they used to have a 3 way.
They would tell me how they would have to put it in between positions to combine pickups.
I remember the day I decided to put a humbucker in it like Eddie Van Halen
I used a wood chisel and a steak knife to cut it out.
When I showed it to the guy at the store he was like what have you done?
He quickly took it apart dremeled it out and used a pickup ring to fix it.
Good Times - learning curve :)

On a completely different note, I see that you are from Kansas City!

I lived in Weston, MO about two years ago. It's a very cool little town, where you can drink great local beer and listen to the best live Irish music (rock and treditional) at "O'malley's Irish Pub," eat great food and listen to live jazz at "The Vineyards," check out my friend, Mike Terpening's music store and studio, and try hand-rolled cigars at my buddy Cory's cigar shop, "Weston Tobacco." It's worth taking your wife for a Saturday get away. Sunday evenings O'malley's has Bob Reeder performing like music from about 6-9 PM.

If you own a bike, it's a nice short trip up I29 and west of Platte City.

Hell, I thought Aberdeen closed -- back during the Clinton era.

I spent a few years at Ft. Meade in the late '70s and early '80s.

Arjay,

No, Aberdeen got bigger, but I seem to recall the maintence school was heading to Ft. Lee.

What unit were you with at Meade?

Having said that, I'll tell you now that the mid boost is going to darken up your sound a bit. It will also make the guitar louder and yes, give you some really nice OD on your amp's tubes.

Got the new Pearloid pickguard in the mail and was able to button up the Strat last night, put on a new set of EB Cobalts and fired up the SCX2.

No question that, even when set all the way off, there is a new circuit involved. I played for about an hour and I really like the sounds I am getting. I have a Rick 650F which I replaced the bridge mini humbucker pu with an old Rick "toaster" pu. This gives me the classic 60s clean tone as well as the Tom Petty 6 string sound. There was always some overlap between the Strat and the Rick, now the Strat sits squarely between the Rick and the Epiphone Dot ( poor man's ES-335 ).

For anyone thinking of doing this mod, I highly recommend playing one with the boost circuit before you do, it does change the sound of your Lace Sensors and may not be what everyone wants.

The 1-3-5 sounds are very close, perhaps a little richer, the 2-4 sounds are not quite as bright as before, this is not a bad thing. I did have to mess with my EQ settings to get a usable tone, but that is what those little dials are for!

Once you start playing with the boost the fun really starts. The SCX2 REALLY likes having the clean channel pushed by the boost, I will get a lot more mileage out of rig this way.

About my only complaint comes with the TBX control, I had it on the old wiring and liked it. On this setup there is not enough adjustment from complete treble cut forward. I have to research but I believe I can change either the resistor or capacitor to correct this. I will screw with that once I get my recording computer running again.

Sorry for the long post, hope this helps someone,
Harry

I had all the Fender Lace pick ups. I always found the Gold Laces Sensors to be too thin sounding with no bottom end or fullness. I liked the Silver Lace Sensors much better. The BLue and Gold Lace Sensors were too dull sounding. I like Seymour Duncan Stack pick ups but with 500k pots or SCN pick up but the new Zexcoil pick ups the vintage models are so noiseless and have excellent tone.
