Hey, I'm thinking of setting up a high bypass on my volume pot. This lets me lower the volume without effecting the tone at all. I have one issue though. I use my volume for more then just volume, I also use it to adjust the amount of distortion when running at high gain. I like the idea of having my tone not change with volume level, but will this also hinder my ability to lower my distortion level using the volume pot? I was hoping someone here may have already tried this stuff out.

Im gonna use a Fender 680pF Cap and a 220K resistor. Im pretty sure thats about right. If anyone has any info on this please share.

Thanks

You are driving the amp from the guitar, ie, using the instrument's volume knob to boost or reduce the pre-amp break-up. This is excellent: an object lesson to beginners.

The amount you are driving the tubes will depend on the total output of the guitar at any given moment, due to volume level or picking strength. I guess keeping the highs in the signal as you turn down the knob must increase the output very slightly, but the difference is going to be negligible compared to what you are doing by turning the pot. At most, you may have to turn down to 2 1/2 rather than 3 to get the same reduction in gain, but I rather doubt you will even notice a difference. No doubt, your EQ settings on the amp must theoretically interact with things, too, but it's minimal.

The only thing I'd have against your proposed mod is that as we turn up the knob for more gain we often want a bit more treble as well, to increase the aggression of the whole sound as our solo builds. Just as you would not loose treble as you turn down so you won't add to it as you turn up. So, maybe a bit less of an "organic" playing feel.

Still, an easily reversable mod if you find you don't like it.

Of course, I bow to anyone who knows better than me on this. But I don't think you need to worry: go ahead with your modification.

I think your right about the gain control with the distortion. Having a little extra treble in my signal is not gonna change things much. I decided to not put the volume kit in, but I still have it. I am happy I didn't put it in because on this guitar I can not hear tone loss as I reduce volume. Now my other Fender is different so I may end up putting the volume kit in that guitar. But anyway this is why im trying to do this stuff myself. So I can change my guitars without having to run to the music store constantly. Thanks for the explanation.

In my experience, Humbucker pickups need that volume control modification more than single coil pickups.
