I just bought a "1985" Fender Strat USA for 500.00. It makes an awful feedback noise unless the string touches the pick-up. A long as one string makes contact with the pick-up it plays crystal clear. It has two tone and a volume knob with a 5 way switch. It does not have the original pick-ups so I'm hoping its wired wrong. I cannot seem to find that wiring diagram. Can anyone HELP! If I can figure how to I will send pics.

Modern American Strats have been wired like this for years:

Feedback or loud buzz/hum? Probably a bad ground.

Thanks. I'm hoping. Buzzing when idle. Squelching and crunching when played.

Hmmm, don't think there's much you can do about it. Would be best to just get rid of it. I'd be willing to take it off your hands for a fair price

All jokes aside, I believe bluesky is on to something. Check your grounds and while you're in there why not check the tone cap for a short or something as well as all the soldering for any breaks. Good luck.

Sounds very much like the strings aren't grounded. If you've got a multimeter, check that there's little or no resistance between the output ground connection (or the jackplate) and the bridge. If you get a high resistance (no continuity) then solder a wire from the back of the volume pot onto the trem claw in the back of the guitar.

And if you don't have a multimeter - buy one and learn how to check resistances, it'll save you a lot of cash on repair bills in the long term.

Squelching? If it sounds more like squealing, it can be a microphonic pickup.
