Apologies if this is not new: I've stolen it from my review on the relevant instrument page.

I've just bought a Classic 60s, in Candy Apple Red, from a big-box store in the UK. They confirmed that they 'check' the guitars prior to dispatch (likely from a warehouse), but do not actually undertake any setup work.

The frets have been levelled, but not crowned, so they all have wide, flat tops. Any note, played anywhere on the neck has a 'fizz' to it, as rather than touching just the top of a fret (the crown), the string lays across the flat top of the fret and rattles (otherwise, the guitar is dead-on to recommended setup specs). Essentially, the guitar sounds like the frets are half-worn-out from new!
Should a guitar at this price point really require the buyer to have a fret dress done to correct inadequate assembly/detailing work?

I shall be grateful for any thoughts, especially from those who 'run things' round here.
This is the first new guitar I've encountered with this problem - some far less illustrious (and far less expensive) guitars than this have had far superior fretwork.

Best,

It just needs a setup, I believe.

Hi Hofner59: out of curiosity I'd love to see a decent close-up photo to know just how wide and flat those fret tops are, if you felt like posting it.

But in short, no, a guitar should not come with uncrowned frets, and I've never seen a Fender sold new in that condition, let alone a Mexican Classic '60s, which to my eye have got better and better in the last handful of years. It's surprising.

If it is as bad as you suggest it sounds like a QC error and I'd be returning the guitar for a replacement if I were you. It is certainly not your responsibility to get the frets crowned on a brand new guitar - for goodness sake don't think of doing so, because that will invalidate your right to a replacement. And of course, under both Fender's warranty and your regular consumer rights it is to the seller that you direct your complaint, and for them in turn to discuss it with the manufacturer, if either can be bothered. So simply send it back.

Which shop, by the way? If the guitar arrived in its never-opened box then it isn't really the seller's fault (though they could have saved themselves some postage by inspecting it before sending it out). But it would be interesting to hear how their customer service shapes up from this point.

Good luck - C

I've never actually owned one of those guitars but I've bought at least a half dozen of those necks (brand new) from The Stratosphere. Without exception, all of them were pretty nice examples right out of the carton.

+1K...I have one of those...from 2007 that I bought new and the fretwork was perfect when I got it and played like a dream. I even use a pic of it for my Avatar.
