Hi All

I have a set of cs69s in one strat, sound great but dont like guitar. So bought new strat with bare knuckle irish tours , which I do like but I want to change neck pup to cs69. When I put this in the new guitar it does not sound , as clear, not as glassy ,its loses something.

When I change whole scratchplate it sounds same as in old guitar, so conclusion is its not the woods of different guitars.

The original scratch plate has separate tone for neck and middle and bridge pup not wired up.
Pots are mounted on a copper plate behind scratch plate and also have a ground wire connecting back of all three pots.

New Scratchplate has bridge pup wired in with middle pup tone pot, a backing plate that looks like alloy and has no common ground wire, maybe this can affect the tone.

When I have figured out have to post pics of underside of both scratch plates i will , maybe this could help you guys.

Many thanks All
Mike F

Same pickups ?

Bridge/ tremolo same steel , nut , string T

Hi Statele52

When i work out how to post pics I will . Both USA. The point is old scratchplate in new guitar cs 69 sounds perfect , so the problem has got to be on the wiring differences between the two.

Nice photos .

First , are you sure is it same pickups on boths ? There are no number on pickups on the new pickgard are they CS ?

Can you read OHMS on each pickup with meter ?

Capacitor on the "new plate" look to be shorted on pot body OR It is the picture ? Capacitor yellow wire must not touch the pot's body .

New scratchplate :

1- Somebody work on switch , solder wire . Are you sure wiring are the same on both pickgard / scratchplate. And solder are good ?

2- There are no ground wires between pots . Normaly pickgard 's ground silver sheet will do the job but better to use wire .
Like your old pickgard ; copper shied do the ground but for better result it have ground wires between pot's body .

Hi Stratele52

I see what uou mean about the yellow cap wire. I will check it out tomorrow.the only pup I am concerned with is the cs 69 which I moved between the two different plates. The wiring is not the same,as I said on the new plate the bridge pup is wired to the tone pot , on the old plate it is not.
Maybe I will start by adding a ground wire to the back of the pots same as old plate. Any suggestions as to what size wire.?

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike ,

Now I understand better , you move same CS pickup on both pickgard . Not easy to test . Pickup height must be same too.

About bridge PU / tone pot wiring : All wiring must be same to do a good test. Or remove tone capacitor. This will cancel tone circuit you'll hear pure PU sound

Wire size for ground ; about any size , there a not much current / voltage . #16 to #24 gauge.

Thanks Stratele52

You have been a great help. I will check the yellow cap wire , then maybe take caps out of circuit after first adding ground wire ot back of pots.

Thanks Again
Mike
