Hello. I had to replace the standard overseas straight line 5 way switch with standard American strat switch(4 post on each side). I used the fender wiring diagram and the
Volume and tone works for each position selected. The problem that I am having is that I am getting a terrible buzz now. Grounds are all properly connected. All I did was unsolder and resolder the wires in proper position and jumpered where needed. Does any body have a diagram or know why this is occurring? When you touch the wires the buzz gets worse. Help!!

It sounds like you have got a ground that is not connected. Retrace were you started and see if you left a ground off by accident. It usually is one of the black wires. May be someone else can chime in and help also.

Twanged....

There was a black wire on the old overseas switch body/frame that just soldered to the neck tone pot. All of the other diagrams I reviewed for the new std switch did not call out for this wire and I traced all other grounds and they are connected(daisy chained, etc) like std strat wiring. This strat does not share a tone cap but has 1 for each tone pot. Whatcha think?

Thx for helping me.

The connection concerning this problem could be the Jack that plugs into your guitar. There are two wires there. Try Reversing them. Hopefully that will take care of your problems. Basically what I call a reverse ground effect. Could have been like that when you got it. I have seen it before, people wiring the Jacks and even the pots backwards. Make sure that when you wired the pots back that you did not wire them backwards. That hopefully will fix your humming.

Ah-ha! That's what I was about to say! +1 on that. :D

Cheers - C

I would also check the dimension on the body thickness.
MIA and MIM bodies 1"3/4 thick, the cavity is about 1"5/8th deep.

But Squier MIC and I suspect the MIK's being the same body thickness of 1"5/8th. This would give you a shallower control pocket.
I suspect the lead connections on your new 5 way switch are touching the cavity and since the cavity is sprayed with insulating paint you are grounding out....

I have had this problem with a couple Squier bodies. It's a simple remedy but it is a precise operation to rout out the cavity only as much as you need for clearance at the offending location. There is about 1/8th to 3/16th of thickness there so unless you can do this with your eyes closed ( experienced woodworker   ) I would seek assistance.

You might also give a shout to www.stewmac.com and ask them for advice and if they have a simpler option...

Either way I believe your issue is grounding out hot leads...

Ciao...

I have a lite ash strat, and replaced the in-line switch with an American 5-way with no problem. Depth of body cavity not an issue at all. I would explore your wiring further. Something is not grounded right. Not to say something isn't touching the cavity in his case, but from my experience with same guitar, there was not a clearance problem.
