I have a Mexican strat, serial number mz5113570. The MZ means Mexico and the 5 means 2005-2006. The odd thing about this one is it has only two knobs -- one tone, one volume. There is a "Fender Special Edition" sticker on the back of the neck by the tuners. The body is gold, with a shiny chrome pickguard. It has one humbucker and two single pick-ups, maple fretboard.

The only strats with two knobs I could find in web discussion were from the early 1980's. Did Fender make a "hearken back to the early 80's" model in 05-06 or something? Anybody know what this thing is that I have?

Pics would help...but sounds like it may be a partscaster...someone sticking a new MIM neck onto an older two knob Strat?

It's a Gold Sister Strat.

There's also a Silver Sister with an Inca Silver finish and a rosewood fingerboard.

Unlike the Gold Sister the Silver Sister came with the regular 3-knob setup.

Both guitars sported an HSS configuration.

Discontinued in 2007.

Thank you! Anyone know why it has just one volume and one tone control, unlike most other strats? Just to save on production cost? Or some other reason? Just curious.

Each of these models came with a different control layout as specified by their designers.

Well, I can only assume that the designer wanted to keep it simple.
Since many of the guitar players don't know how to use guitar controls anyway and prefer the "full throttle" setting (everything on 10), while others just like to have one master for volume and tone just for simplicity's sake, there is a market for two knob guitars and it has advantages and disadvantages.

It's a matter of personal preference.

There's even popular strat players who just use one volume control, that's it!
Their style of music and playing just has no need for tone control (Eddie Van Halen, Tom Delonge and others...)
