when looking for a Strat, is it possible to choose a specific model and have it custom painted? If i really like an American Strat Deluxe but want it in a cool surf color or something is it something the custom shop can do? Does it add a crazy amount of money? Just curious.

You can find the Custom Shop quote sheet here that shows all the options available. Has cost attached as well - though no idea if it's accurate

http://wpc.077d.edgecastcdn.net/00077D/ ... uideII.pdf

Just to clarify a little, you can't necessarily choose a specific model and change the color (For example, you can't say I want a Jeff Beck Strat but I want it blue) You'd have to spec your order out to match the specs of the guitar you are modelling after

You can also go the partscaster route if such a thing wouldn't bother you. Get a deluxe neck and find a body in a color you like. if you are determined to have the beveled neck heel, your options will be limited.

Or you can buy a deluxe and have the body painted independently (which is probably a lot cheaper than a CS guitar).

Funnily enough I was wondering something similar. I did look at the custom shop route, but before you even start you're looking at a base price of £3000! *gulp*

I don't think that is what the OP is asking. He asked if an American Deluxe Stratocaster, which is a regular production guitar (not a Custom Shop guitar) could be repainted by the Custom Shop. The answer to that question is "No".

thanks for all the replies, yes i was thinking maybe you could get a Strat deluxe repainted at the custom shop. I agree one route would be to match features at the custom shop but unfortunately i do not have that kind of scratch. my options are to save until i can buy or just deluxe with a color i like most. I shouldn't be so picky but i kinda am.

Out of curiosity, why do you want a deluxe and what color are you looking for (or just any in the Surf family - which I translate to the pastels, surf and seafoam green, daphne blue and similar colors, shell pink and such)

well, generally speaking i would love to get a higher end american strat so i thought the deluxe would be top of the mark except for the custom shop stuff. I might be wrong about that but i thought the deluxe was tops.
As for color you are correct, i love the oranges and seafoam colors that were big in the 60's. to be honest i have only started looking into options and stuff like that with strats. I have a HH Jaguar special and am currently modding the heck out of a MIM strat.

you might want to try one before assuming the "highest" on the models list is the best.

I've never tried one but it seems to have features that some either love or hate such as:
compound neck radius
S1 switching with noiseless pickups.

Just as an option, you might want to look at the Surf green Jeff Beck, I have one. it's the right color, it has the deluxe beveled neck heel (which is quite comfy) LSR roller nut, which I like but some don't and sintered block saddles which I also like and some don't. I also like the "hot noiseless" pickups but again, others don't.

you may want to look at other artist strats as well, they are arguably a step up from an American Standard (not that there's anythign wrong with an Amer Std). The Vintage Reissues I think would also be considered a step above the American Standard if you like vintage features, though the newest versions are quite expensive (but that faded Sonic '59 is ridiculously sexy)

You could always take the guitar to a local luthier and have them repaint it for you. Should cost somewhere around $3-400.

The cost isn't as bad as it looks. those are manufacturers recommended retail prices, most custom shop retailers will discount them.

I have just ordered a Jazzmaster, from GAK in Brighton and the cost of that was about £2200.

For an NOS 60s strat i was quoted in the region of £2000 and a pro would have been about £1800.

Really? that's very, very interesting. I was thinking about recreating something like a Sambora Strat in that beautiful cherryburst. £2000 - 2500 I could live with for a custom build. Thanks for that.

I believe the American Deluxe is one of Fenders Bests but...
I have an American Standard and American Highway 1 that is also some of Fenders bests.

You can always find a Standard or Special closer to a color you might want and make it yours.

Put locking tuners on it change the pickups if you want whatever your heart desires.
I have one of each model and they all offer something special and I customized each.
In the end the American Standard was probably the best value.
