Hey guys,

I recently acquired a used Fender Stratocaster from my brother. The serial number is pretty much warn off the head-stock. It is a "Made in Korea" model. He couldn't remember when he got it, but it's from the late 80's - early 90's era. It is not a "Squier" edition either. Anybody have any info on how I'd be able to find out what year it was made? And what the possible value of it could range from. It's in pretty good shape considering the age and storage of it. I'd like to restore what I can on it, and keep it for personal playing and sentimental value.

Any help or info is much appreciated.

Thanks!

- Rich

Just my opinions for what they're worth...

As far as dating goes, even if the serial number was intact you'd have a 50/50 shot of finding out the date based on that alone as Fender had a bad tendency to keep rather poor records of their imports. You're best bet would be to pull the neck and the pickguard and look for any date stamps. Again though this could be 50/50 as I've seen many imports with no stamps at all.

As far as value goes, don't get your hopes up. Fender has had a few over the years that have come out of Korea and they seem to vary a bit as far as quality goes...some are very decent instruments, some are not. That said, with certain rare exceptions (such as the Japanese E-series), most import Fenders don't typically have a lot of cash value...on average, between $200 and $400 depending on the quality of the individual instrument (and quite often less).

Some pics would help and perhaps someone could add a bit more once we see it, otherwise I'd suggest that if it's a decent guitar, you just enjoy it for what it is...a Strat :-)

Absolutely going to enjoy it. It's never getting sold, it was his first guitar. I have a les paul that I'm starting on, so he gave me the strat to mess around with too. I will post the pics later today when I get home.

Curiosity kicked in, because his memory was vague on when he got it, but it was late 80's for sure. I just like to find out the history of things with nostalgic value. I know these models are pretty rare to find,(usually find the Japan models) I think they were made for european release only, or something of that nature, and then made their way here somehow. Before the move to Mexico. It's all Fender original parts.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll follow up again later tonight.
