I took it in to an authorized Fender Service Center today. We'll see what Fender has to say. I might be up for a swap if they don't think the warranty covers it.

The service center got a hold of Fender and sent pics. Fender has agreed to replace the body. But it looks like it will be 3-4 months before the body arrives. So I'm rockin in full relic mode til then. Will see what the guitar looks like then and decide whether or not I really want to swap it out.

Maybe you create a trend - the flaking off Strat.
Seriously it is one of a kind and it will look like a Gallagher sort of special finish.
Naturally reliced - fast.
On the other side taking the new body is maybe the better decision.
Keep us updated.

All the best,
Robin

They would probably put that body on a custom shop as soon as they got it...

Well, since I get to hang on to it for 3 months, I'm going to give something a try... Will post a few pictures to show how it turns out ;)

I can actually scratch the paint off with my thumbnail. It's _thin_.

People pay a lot of money to the custom shop to get their guitars destroyed by the manufacturer on purpose.
You just doubled the value of your guitar and it's not even artificial!!

Well, take it back on warranty.

Good luck.

Wow!
Perfect example for a manufacturer to escape any warranty regarding finish!
These warranty exclusions open the door for every excuse and for blaming the damage to the owner. If nothing works, sweat and body salts will!
I hope for oddtone that he will get his warranty, though.
There's definitely something wrong with the paint job.

Good luck!

I've got one from 2011 that's black and something similar happened to it. I actually posted a thread about it at the time but I had no way to post pics of it so it was hard for people to know what I was talking about exactly.

Mine has chipped off paint all over the body but not normally in large patches like yours...mine are usually fairly small chips but any little thing (using a screw driver to adjust a saddle) made another chip on mine fall off. I'd say there's probably 20 to 35 chips of paint gone from the guitar. I noticed the first chips missing after owning the guitar for about 6 months. It's continues to happen but it doesn't really bother me. I like the way it plays and sounds and the paint chipping doesn't effect either so I decided to keep it.

No offense intended at all but yours looks a bit more extreme than mine. Either way, I'm pretty sure that wasn't supposed to happen to my guitar and I know it wasn't supposed to happen to yours. Guess it just depends on how much you like it. I liked mine enough to put up with it. I've gotten used to it now. Makes it look alot older than it is.

You mean to say that you've had the guitar for less than 12 months, and it will take 3-4months before the fault will be fixed? That's a little unreasonable timeframe don't ya think? Is the warranty going to lapse within that timeframe?

I'd be asking for a new one. Sorry but I think that's unreasonable.

I think if the problem made the guitar unplayable, I would likely be livid about waiting 3-4 months. But this more of an aesthetic/annoyance issue. The guitar still plays very very well, so I'm not going to spend a lot of time worried about it. Thanks for the support, though. Still no response to the emails I sent to Fender consumer relations by the way. Glad I decided to drive into a Fender service center...

I got tired of dealing w/ the chips breaking off, so I used my pick to scrape around the edges until I hit paint that was more solid. This is what it looks like now. Haven't lost any new paint in several days, so I think it's pretty stable.

Dude, that thing looks cool now. I would think about keeping it instead of swapping out the body. Maybe they will let you keep it when the new one comes in.

Unfortunately no. Fender wants the body back. So I'm debating calling up Fender and telling them not to ship out a replacement; that I'll stick with my beat up one. Am I nuts?

I would agree with all the posts about how great the "new" look is except for one thing. It is a 2012 guitar not a 2002, 1992 or 1982 model that was rode hard and put to bed sweaty.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see my 2012 American Standard look like that in 2022 or so.

That being said, you seem to be in love with this particular guitar and how it plays and sounds. I would be willing to bet that after the body is changed, you may always long for this one back....

So, if it were me I would look at another option, if the peeling finish really messes with you. Get this one re-finished.

This is not an easy decision and I am glad that it is not me having to make it....

I paid for a Custom Shop Teambuilt Strat, waited a year for it to arrive and it was fitted with the wrong neck. It took another six months to get it back again 'priority.' You've been hanging around here long enough to have heard enough heartache stories about the company to know that it is what it is. They're going to replace it and he'll have use of a guitar untill that time also.
