Hi, first all I'm new here and I'm new to Fender!

I am in the market for a Strat and I was just going to buy a brand new MIM Strat but speaking to an old boy at work who seems to know his stuff I have been dissuaded against that idea and am now looking at used MIA strats.

The only compromise I'm having to make is the fact I wanted candy apple red and the fret board to be glossy but that's no issue really.

Anyway, I found this guitar for £550 but it's some distance away so I won't be able to look at it until I've bought it. I wanted to know if it looked genuine in your expert opinion and if it is, how nice it will play compared to the MIM I originally intended on getting. The guy reckons he bought it in the mid 90s but it was made early 90s.

Here it is:

Thanks for looking!

Hi and welcome,

it was made in 1991/92. Looks legit but ask for more pics of the back and the first fret.
Fretboard seems to have a cut at the first fret high e string.

All the best,
Robin

looks to me like theres a fair chunk of wood missing from the neck at the first 2 frets. maybe a botched nut replacement ? it would put me off buying it unless the price reflected having to buy a new neck.

theres loads of mint strats out there, dont just buy the first one, especially if bits of it are MIA

I can't believe how much they cost, even second hand, in the UK compared to America :(

this is true, im in the UK i know what you mean, sometimes our american brethren forget this when they're telling us to go out and buy US made guitars willy-nilly. roughly, a $1000 guitar in the US will cost 1000 GBP (my pound sign key is broke  ). at least thats what ive noticed comparing prices for US std strats.

i am not of the opinion that US guitars are that much better than the MIM. MIM guitars are cheaper mainly because of labour, secondly because of electrics. cheap labour doesnt mean blind monkeys, it just means thats the way that countries economy works.

for the price of a second hand MIM strat and some real nice pickups and pots, you can easily have something that will match a US strat, in all but 'bragging rights'.

The guy has kindly sent me these 3 pictures and that there is wear in the first two frets but no wood missing. He also said he'd knock the price down to 475. I'm not sure what to do.

He said £450 and I can return it if I don't get on with it.

Any thoughts guys?

Go for it. I have a few older Strats with that bit of wear near the nut, and it's not a problem. Just a slight bit of natural relicking, that's all. Have fun and tell us how it sounds!

The fretboard does appear to be worn/chipped at the first couple of frets, but it looks like a great guitar otherwise.
