How can you tell if an AVRI is MIA or MIJ? I picked one up and it has just a VXXX serial number on neck plate and thats it.

Got a philips screwdriver handy?

The MIJ re-issues will have cheaply-made control pots and switches while the AVRI is equipped with premium components from CTS and Oak/Grigsby.

A quick non-invasive visual clue is the location of the string tree -- the Fuji-Gen guitars have it located even with the A string tuner post, just as it would be on a real Strat from 1962. Fender-Corona mounts theirs a little further "north" on the headstock, midway between the A and D string tuners.

Thanks. Its between the A and D tuners, closer to the D. I also emailed fender customer relations to get info on it. Great instrument btw..

Sounds like a US-built re-issue.

Congratulations!

Prior to 1998, the AVRI had the modern twelfth fret dot spacing (narrow), not period correct for '62, while the Japanese had period correct dot spacing. Period correct for '62 would have the dots nearly directly under the A and B strings, and the modern Fender are more narrowly spaced. This dot spacing change happened almost immediately after CBS bought Fender, and even the first AVRIs in the '80s had the spacing wrong. It wasn't corrected on the US reissues until around 1998. Another clue as to the time period, if a US version.

I have owned one of each of these instruments for years, and never knew this before today. This distinction noted above is spot on! And I did change out the pots on my MIJ re-issue shortly after purchase, they definitely were lesser quality than my AVRI.

The MIJ/CIJ Strats are mighty fine instruments once you tweak them a bit.

Oh, certainly! I have no qualms about picking up either my USA '62 or CIJ '62 for any gig. The CIJ comes in handy for those hot outdoor summer gigs, since the poly finish doesn't "gum up" and get sticky & nasty like the worn lacquer finish on my AVRI. The build quality on Fender Japan products is excellent.
