hey everybody,
I need a recomendation of pickups for my SSS strat, i play lots of rock, metal, punk, alternative, and other distorted sounds. maybe a humbucker to fit into a single coil slot, or maybe just singles. I dont know, any suggestions are welcome, except EMG single coils, i really dont like those, and possibly hum cancelling preferably 'cause i hate hum.

Thanks

And i am on a budget, im 14 and i dont have a job, so i rely on allowance.

When someone says, "I really don't like EMG's", I know they haven't heard all the pickups that EMG makes.

If you heard my set of EMG SV's (Strat Vintage), you'd be amazed: dead quiet and tons of Strattiness.

I couldn't agree more. How can anyone not like David Gilmours tone and he uses EMG's.

Then perhaps you might want to save and spend your money on a GOOD amp or a distortion pedal, instead of replacing your pickups.

You haven't told us what's wrong with the pickups you currently have.

I'm going to have to go with this route to take first. From someone who has gone through 9 differnt guitars and 5 differnt amps and only God can probably count as high as the amount of pedals I've been through I have learned one major thing. The right amp is so important and maybe very under rated. I have one amp and one pedal that has stuck with me for 10 years no matter what guitar(pickups) or band I was with at the time. Being young this might be the one piece of advice I can give you. As for the emgs there is another thread out there right now you might want to read it too. Don't knock them thay are a great pick up. Play with all your options and don't rule anything out because of price. You may not be able to afford what you want now but later down the road things may change but good luck with this.

Ditto the comments about the importance of a good amp. If you have a good axe get a good amp next. Save, scrimp, do what you have to to get a quality, reliable amp. I was 16 when I bought my Ampeg VT22 (100w 2x12" combo). I had to work and save all summer to get the $500 it took. That's $2,533 in today's dollars, the cost of today's Marshall JVM410C Tube Combo Amp. I still have my Ampeg 37 years later.

If you are still mesmerized with the thought of new pups, based on the genres you indicated you play, I'd seriously consider at the EMGs. Good rule of thumb, look at your guitar heroes and find out what they use. Go from there. But start with the amp.

ANOTHER THOUGHT - Now's the time to get it when you're young because if you're like most guitar players I know as they get older and get responsibilities they find other things to spend the money on. After I got married I couldn't spend the money I spent on that amp without getting a divorce. (And we ALWAYS find a place for my stack wherever we've lived apts, houses, and, yes, mobile homes) :D

If I were starting from scratch and building a guitar, you would see me loading it with Bill Lawrence (the Bill & Becky kind) or Seymour Duncans. If I had a real strat, I would keep it that way. I do not invision ever replacing the pickups my American Standard strats came with.

There are some great effect pedals out there that can color your sound without altering your guitar.

You're getting some great advice form many different schools of thought. That's because tone is subjective.
I KNOW you have heard Credence Clearwater Reviaval; if you have listened to the radio; they played great gear through "Custom" (brand name; not one of a kind) Amplifiers. I remember people I respected saying they sounded terrible and after going to Akron Music Center (in another city!) I listened to them; I was maybe 14 or 15; and I sure liked the Fender Vibro Champ Amp (with no reverb) WAY better than that chunck of you know what Custom; besides it was used and cheaper at $65.00 bucks. But CCR made millions of records and made the big bucks for a few years. Why? because they had a unique sound; but a trained ear can here those Customs....

Save your cash, Save your cash, Save your cash, Save your cash.

Ok my advice: Get rid of any crappy no name cords and patch cords; I traded a 70s strat in Ash for a Les Paul cause it sounded crappy; it sounded crappy because of the crappy cords (RU 58 attenna lead) I had.

So after you upgrade your wires if nessesary...

Keep your axe whole and get a great amp; One YOU like; one that will generate the tone YOU want or close to it and THEN look at pedals; then look at mods on your axe.

Play or listen to other guitars outfitted like you think you want yours to be and make a decision then.

In any case we'd love to hear (read) about what you're going to do!

It all depends on what you like. A stock American Strat would actually be fine with me, but I end up modifying my guitars anyway.

I need a lot of different tones from mine, as well as a classic Strat tone. The set up on my main Strat is...

Bridge: SD JR Jr
Middle: Lace Sensor (Silver)
Neck: Lace Sensor (Blue)

I also have it custom wired. The bottom tone knob now controls all the pickups, including the bridge. The middle tone knob is now a volume fader for the inner coil of the JB Jr on the bridge. This lets me dial in a lot of tones in between just full humbucker or straight single coil.

For me, the JB Jr can get as much low end and handle as much gain as my Rectifier can throw at it, and still sound very strat-ish when I play clean Motown stuff or some country. I still get all the Strat quack that I want, and I can play anything I play on it now: metal, pop, jazz, country, zappa, any just about anything in between.

Not the perfect setup for everybody, but it is for me. Might give you some ideas that you're looking for.

noise cancelling emi tape in most cases will take care of any hum although if your wireing is out of wack it could cause the same problem. make sure your bridge is properly grounded with the rest of your instrument. be sure your tone control is properly grounded as well. have you seen the latest from fender. kind of a synth built in , an extra button to play with, gives you normal play , a distortion, and some other stuff that bends the sound to where you want it. maybe you should check the site, it's called fender.com. check out the vgstrat
