It would appear my long search for a new Strat is over!
I played an American Deluxe in my local music store. Loved it.
BUT........

When I moved the 5-way switch to the neck position, there was no sound with ths S-1 switch up. All over positions were fine.
I pressed the S1 down, and the neck pup came back to life, but all other positions that worked with the S1 up were now dead.
The guy said, "That's nothing, probably a loose wire."
I understand that. But it's a brand new guitar and this store watches people like a hawk when they test a new guitar, not like a big box store that hands them out willy-nilly so it's unlikely it was abused in any way to cause this.
He's asking $1599.00 for a sunset metallic finish Deluxe. He said he'd make a great deal.
I'm just leary about buying a new guitar that needs a repair.

Should I still buy this guitar? Need advice.

Is the dealer an authorized Fender dealer? If not, no warranty coverage.

The "notorious" S1 switch is known for being difficult and full of problems. Either it's the S1 itself or the Super Switch that has the issue. My moneys on the Super Switch being the culprit.

I was blessed with having a Super Switch/S1 on a 2004 that works flawlessly. One of the Best Strats I have heard. The Switch itself seems to need cleaning at least once a year, sometimes twice a year. When they work, they work.

I have an LP where sometimes the neck setting on the switch will cut out. Just a bit of cleaner and it's OK for months.

What I forgot to mention in my original post was that he said he would have his luthier fix the problem. He is an authorized Fender dealer.

This guitar doesn't have a Super Switch.
It only has the S1 button on the volume knob.

After I handed the guitar back to him, he hung it back up. If that was me, I would have taken immediately to the luthier on duty to have it fixed.

If you really like the guitar, I would have him fix it. I haven't had any problems with my S1 or super switch.

Trust me - if it has the S1 it has a 5-way Super Switch. Then have him fix it and buy the thing. Don't let it hang there another day. Go for it.

Yeah, but it's kinda like seeing a new car on the lot with a flat tire or something.

One thing to be aware of is. He may be an authorized Seller but is probaly not an Authorized Repair facility. If his guy fixes it, it may void the warranty. He does not what to pay shipping to the Repair shop that comes off the top of his profit. If he was an authorized repair shop it would have been fixed before it went on the wall and no discount.

Yes, I agree completely. He wanted me to buy the guitar before he fixed it which is something I found to be a little odd. Friend of mine said S1 switch repairs can be "challenging" if the tech isn't experienced with them.

This dealer did have a 2011 American Standard marked down to $899.00 that I played before I played the Deluxe. Another dealer nearby had a new 2010 American Standard he was marking down for clearance at $800.00.

The positions that did work on the Deluxe sounded awesome, though. Great sound.

I wouldn't touch it unless he fixed it first. And to IdahoRed's point, only if he is an authorized repair facility.
