Hello everyone,

I'm looking for the specs of a fender stratocaster 1968 maple neck. I know it has the big CBS headstock and it uses a maple cap. However, is it a veener maple cap or a slab ? Most of my research seems to point out a veener cap because that's the process they used on rosewood but the info isn't 100% verified.

Second question, what was the nut width fender used on this model? 40(1.5748inches) or 42(1.65inches)mm

Third and most important question: what was the neck shape they used? Most books about strats talk about a U shape neck and even fender makes time machine models using a U shape. However, the U shape of today is very thick and the same width at the 1st and 12st fret. So does anyone have an approximation of the width of a 1968 neck?

Thanks :)

1-5/8" Nut
7.25" Radius
Nitro Finish
21.90 @ 1st fret
24.90mm @ 12th fret

That are the specs for just one 1968 neck. I am sure they varied a lot. They used slab cap on that neck. Fat C shape.

All the best,
Robin

Do you have any source for shape and size of the neck? Because i've done more reasearch and that's what i've come up with:

real 1969 strat (from the owner)
Neck is 21.73mm @ 1st Fret 0.855512

24.09mm @ 12th Fret 0.948425

U shape

ANd here's the 1969 time machine U shape Neck Thickness At 1st Fret: .850"
Neck Thickness At 12th Fret: .910"

The specs are from the Vegas guy so don´t take them too serious.
If you call it a fat C shape or a U shape - well, the necks are different and some U shaped necks are wide but flat. Some are U shaped but narrow and thick.

I believe they are more U shaped than C shaped because most all of the big headstock necks are U shaped.

All the best,
Robin

Bare in mind, for many years necks were not milled, but cut and shaped by hand. No two are exactly alike.

I know. But even then, they must have had some kind of standard neck shape and size to aim for. I think i'm gonna go with a U shaped neck with a Neck Thickness At 1st Fret: .850"
Neck Thickness At 12th Fret: .910"
