Hi, everyone.

This is my first post here, so I'd like to take some time to introduce myself.

My name is Jonathan, I am 21 and will be 22 this coming May.

I was born and raised in CA.

I am Hispanic with some of my family living in San Diego and others near the Fender Ensenada plant, as for myself, I live in Whittier, CA.

I have played guitar since I was 17, around April/May of 2008 and as a 5th anniversary-type-thing I recently put down my first of three payments on my very first Stratocaster by way of Sweetwater's lay-a-way program.

Which, I am super excited for. Have wanted one for so, so, so long. It'll be a Fender Standard Stratocaster.

I decided on it after playing it and comparing it to the MIC Strat, the MIA Strat and a Gibson LP and of all of these I felt the Standard Strat sounded the best to me.

My current setup consists of a Squier Showmaster rally stripe that is black with red strips, and has two humbuckers in the neck and bridge pickup.

By way of amplification, I am using a VHT Special 6 speaker cabinet, which I'll be getting its amp head soon enough, and also use a Vox DA10, which is a digital modelling amp.

Finally, as respects to effects, I utilize a zoom G1n pedal.

Anyways, I am getting my Stratocaster in Olympic White, which will be paid off in April, but in the meantime, I'd like to buy the accessories I will be using to customize My Stratocaster with.

I've gotten its tone and volume knobs, whammy bar tip, and pickup selector tip all in black.

For the pickguard, though, I'd like for it to be all white or cream colored, but with a black border where it tapers off to the guitar body.

I've looked, but apparently not well enough, so I have come for your expertise on where to find one like this.

I'm looking for it within the price range of $25-$30.

I've lurked here for a while and I've seen you guys post amazing links that have helped me in the past.

At any rate, thank you so much for taking the time to read my post.

Have good day/night depending on where you are

P.S. I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this question.

Also some additional questions.

What would I have to do to put vintage Kluson tuners on my MIM Standard?

Would they fit out of the box or would I have to (hopefully not) screw some new holes into the headstock?

My guess is I'd need to change the bushings too.

At any rate, thanks again, guys.

If the guitar came with vintage style tuners on it, it would be a simple replacement,
if they have the standard new closed case type, then you will need to drill some starter holes.

Dang. They're closed. I don't want to drill into a new guitar either, so I'll just wait a couple of years to make that modification.

Thanks for answering my question, though, Jimmikatt.

As far as the pickguard goes, I think I'll just buy some black vinyl and apply it to the pickguard. It looks like my best bet, since I just can't find what I'm looking for.

Are you saying you want a solid black bevel on the edges? I've seen white/black/white but not solid black. Good luck with your modding though. I'm going to be cutting my own pickguard and re-wiring it completely which should be interesting being kind of a noob myself. I'm excited to see how it turns out though.

I think the pickguard your looking for is a 3 ply white/black/white. Here is a link to a custom maker that may make something special for you.

http://www.pickguardian.com/pickguardian/index.html

If your going to try vinyl you might go with a black guard and put white on the face I think that would last longer. end trim would tend to peel easily. It would be easier to paint the edge. Find a good sign painter or pin striper.

Wow. That's just awesome.

What do you hope to achieve by rewirinhg the pickguard?

You make a good point regarding longevity. I'll take your advice. I'll just get the white pickguard painted on the edges.

That will last much longer than vinyl.

An addendum to that; you'll not only need extra holes, you'll need special bushing as well. Standard Kluson style tuners use a much smaller bushing than the screw in type used on the standard Mexican tuners...you'll need over-sized bushings.

My question would be, why change the tuners in the first place? The Mexican Standards use excellent tuners...unless you're going for a specific vintage "look" (which won't really be correct with the over-sized bushings), there's no real reason to change those. Just a personal opinion but personally I find the stock Mexican tuners to be FAR superior and considerably more durable than the Klusons.

Mostly personal preference. The pegs, the post have an awesome design in my opinion.

Since I would need to drill holes in the headstock, I'll wait some years before I do that.

My day one mods include the following:

Black screws on the 11-hole pickguard, black tips on the pickup selector and whammy bar, black pickup covers and a black input jack plate.

Welcome to the Forum IHAUNIG ....( fixed )

As far as the tuners, look into this online merchant http://www.wdmusic.com
I would suggest Grover Deluxe tuners, they are vintage styled and a smoother feel mechanically than Kluson's ...

Concerning redrilling if need be, you don't redrill the tuner shaft holes.
Instead use a reamer which you can find at http://www.stewmac.com
They should have vids on this ..
tuner shafts need to be tapered not enlarged completely ..

single layer pick gaurds dont have bevelled edges and you wont get the same effect if the edges are painted. Paint and pick guard face would wear off in no time. As far as longevity you will never wear through a vinyl or celluoid guard. If you do then you are an animal....lol

warmoth has white beveled edge gaurds. You could highlight the edges black with a perm marker.
good luck

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't know Grover made tuners like that. I have Grover tuners on my Epiphone Dove.

These might just be the way to go. Best tuners I have ever had the pleasure of playing with.

By the way, thanks for the nickname.

Can you recommend a good marker brand? I've used them on other projects and i just end up getting a brown overtone using a black permanent marker

The first of many parts for my Strat came in today.

I ordered a black input jack-plate

Image

This week I expect additional black hardware to arrive. The screws, the whammy and pickup selector tips, and the pickup covers are set to arrive before friday.

My anticipation and excitement grows.

Still unsure if I'll be changing the bridge out for a black one. Right now, I don't think I will, but my mind may change in the future.

I don't think a marking pen will give you the results you want. I imagine your using a 3 ply w/b/w to start with. The black ply will always stand out more. I suggest One Shot Lettering Paint. It is very durable and lasts for years exposed to weather on signs. Remember to scuff the edge scotch-brite or some other fine abrasive to give a tooth for the paint to stick. If you find an Old School sign painter I'm sure he'd do this for cheap if you have it all prepped. I do have a couple of w/b/w pickguards laying around that I can tinker with one and see if a marker will give a deep black finish. I just think a glossy paint highlight will really Pop.

Ooh. I just imagined the high gloss on the pickguard. Not gonna lie, my mouth watered a bit.
