A quick reversal of the wires and you're back in business. Looks great! Congrats.

A-ha... so swap the middle pup wires! Currently, it's wired so hot white and ground is red. I simply reverse this? Why does the bridge/middle position sound OK? Is the higher output of the Humbucker just covering up the thin out of phase tone of the middle pickup? Also, why does the middle pickup sound ok by itself? I know, lots of questions, but I'm curious how all this works.

the issue is probably not your wiring, rather that the neck and the middle pickups
are different polarity and wound in a different direction.
your neck pickup is prob, example wound N to S and has a N polarity.
and the middle pu is wound N to S but has aN polarity. thats why you want a Reverse Wound Reverse Polarity in the middle pickup to cancel out the hum, yet not sound thin.
or you could have the same wind direction and same polarity, but no humcanceling,
ala custom shop 69s.
reversing the wires may solve it, but then be out of phase with the bridge wiring.

I may be wrong about what im gonna tell you, but hopefully martian will chime in...
try reversing the neck pickup wiring, that way the neck pick up and the mid wont be out of phase, nassally, and thin. again, wait for someone else to back me up...

Thanks for the response... I've never had this problem before and was pretty sure I wired it up "right" so in a nutshell what you're saying is that my neck and middle pickups aren't going to play nice together? I should have taken another wrong pickup delivery as a sign that I should just get another Fat 50's for the middle position...

The start this was replacing was an American Std and I really didn't like the pickups so I thought I'd just use the same ones I have in another strat that I love... the two Tex-Mex and Super D in the bridge... then the wrong pickups started arriving and things got off course. Now I'm thinking that two Fat 50's and a Super D will do just fine!

If there is a way to just swap a wire though, that'll work for now. I'll wait til someone else chimes in but the info you sent was interesting and makes a little sense to me. Thanks

a good way to test this, is using a compass, this will give you the polarity.
yeah, i dont think you cn go wrong with the fat 50s, besides, you already have a similar setup with tm and super distortion....
variety brother.
btw, i didnt say anything, but that strat looks killer. also the other mjt one too, looks awesome, just the right amount of relicing, i think.

That one's pretty haggard looking I think... as far as the MJT stuff goes, if anyone's into a light relic just order a NOS/Closet Clean finish of theirs... they age pretty quickly! I've had one for less than a year and the finish cracking and wear is already appearing. I think their sunbursts are just to die for...they look killer and really nail the feel of an old guitar.

As far as the pickups go... I'd like to just be done with the project :) I don't mind the tone of the middle pickup by itself so if all I need to do is swap a few wires around, I'd like to just go that route. So I'd swap the neck wires around huh? I have to confess I'm a little confused and waiting for word on that to do... I'm sure someone will chime in sooner or later.

Out of curiosity, where do I place the compass? how does that work?
