Sounds like you are talking about a common problem, due to the neck shrinking, although it is referred to as "fret sprout". The ends of the frets will have to be carefully filed to remove the edges that protrude from the neck. It isn't too difficult to do if taped first to prevent scratching the neck wood. Check one of mine, before and after.

I put Fender Deluxe locking tuners on my Vintage Ash Blonde FSR Strat and my MIM Standard Tele. Direct replacement, no mods necessary. IMO, probably the best mod to make, to fix a guitar thats difficult to keep in tune. One more trick...when tuning, tune down to pitch with lockers, instead of up to pitch with standard tuners.

YES! This is exactly it!
The fingerboard of my neck is lacquered, I hope it won't be too difficult.
What kind of tape and file did you use?

Is it a common problem because on those low price guitars the manufacturers don't wait enough for the woods to dry?
Because I don't have the same issue on my American std strat.

Thanks for the trick! I'll try it.
How many pin lockers did you have on the original tuners? 1 or 2?

Same here. I've had many MIM Strats with this problem, but not one of my Am Strats. With the strings removed, and neck removed from guitar, I use a single layer of painters tape to cover all of the wood around the fret ends, starting on the fret board, one peice of tape on each side of the fret, and angling the tape at the fret board edge to form a triangle shape with the two pieces of tape meeting below the fret end, then one more layer horizontally below the fret ends to completely cover the wood as much as possible, leaving only the fret edge exposed. Painters tape comes off easily without leaving residue. Carefully file, pushing the file from the bottom of the fret edge towards the top of the fret in a rolling motion to follow the curve of the fret end, until the tape begins to wear through. Don't round the fret end too much or the strings will fall off the edges when done, just follow the existing curve, only removing the protruding edges of the fret. I use the small precision file set that I bought from Lowes, the flat file for the fret ends, and the triangle shaped file, with one point ground off, to round the top edges of the frets. Grind one point of the triangle file smooth and rounded slightly, and place the ground edge on the fret board, lean the file edge on the fret, rolling the file towards the top of the fret edge as you pull the file towards the edge of the fret board, and be sure that the tape covers the wood. Remember to file as little as possible, you can always file more, but you can't put it back if you file too much.

locking tuners have saved my butt more than once, changing out a string between songs or set, stick it thru the hole lock it down and tune..

I won't gig without them..

Two locking pins on both the Strat and Tele. Direct fit no mods necessary. Super easy swap.
