I just purchased a New In the box American Strat and according to the specs it should have Fender bullet strings on it. When I went to change the strings they were ball end not bullet. What gives here ? Is this the way fender sends out its American strats now? I checked the website ant it also says bullet strings. Any insight would be great.

Welcome.

I have several theories:

- It was a new or too lazy to utilize the correct set person stringing the guitar on Fender's assembly line.

- The place you bought it from tried to ensure you got brand new strings and didn't have the Bullets.

- The place you bought it from had a new or too lazy to utilize the correct set person stringing the guitar.

- An outright mistake at Fender.

- An outright mistake at the place you purchased it from.

- Gremlins.

I recently noticed the same thing on my MIM Strat (mentioned it in this topic viewtopic.php?f=6&t=83182) and there was another poster who also had ball ended strings on his 2012 American Special. Not sure what's going on with that...

Of course according to "specs" it says use bullets...they want to sell you strings :!:
Use whatever strings you want.

Its not a question of what strings to use, it was just a question as to what the guitar is supposed to come from fender with. I don't use bullets personally, but it is supposed to come from the factory with bullets. This was supposed to be a factory sealed box, not a used, returned or remanufactured guitar. Its like the spec says vintage bent saddles and it has blocks. (just an analogy). I guess I will have to contact fender to find out. THanks for the quick replies :)

I would not tolerate this outrage! You should return the guitar and demand a full refund! :|

As long as I know the strings having the ball ends are made by Fender in the Mexican factory and put on every instrument from Mexico and the US of America. I think that is since 2011 (I don´t know when exactly in 2011).

All the best,
Robin

My boxed 2012 American Deluxe Strat also came with no Bullets here in Canada.

Check Fender Australia's website. Go to American Deluxe Strat and then specifications. Look under strings. There's your answer. No Bullets as stock strings?!

Sorry I can't give you the link from here. Nor can I explain the ball ends.

But, there you have it.

Serious note... since I've had my share of problems removing a broken stub of a bullet string in the past (i.e. the bullet fitting a bit too good, thus ending up being stuck in the inertia bar), I've reverted back to ball end strings. Got no tuning problems with those whatsoever.

I too have an American Special, that as well, did not come with Bullets. It does seems strange that they would cite Bullets as the strings under the Spec, implying (IMO), this is the standard, as well, "advertised" on their website as designed with the tremelo block in mind for tuning stability and sustain. Yet, don't install them? I have read a number of posts that mention this, so I don't think it is the result of a dealer changing strings, rather, being shipped from the Fender factory that way. I did not realize they were not the strings that came with the guitar until my first string change. I can't say I noticed any difference after installing the new strings, which are Bullets.

The first thing I do to a new guitar is rip the old strings off. Who knows how long they were on there, or who and how they strung it?
You are kidding, right?

If I had to make a guess at this, I would suspect that the factory probably just ran out of bullet's that day and instead of holding an order/shipment back, likely just put 250's or something on instead. Mass produced product...it happens.

Personally I would put this one under "don't sweat the petty stuff"...if you're really that concerned about it, I would contact Fender directly and ask "WTF?" otherwise if you're happy with the guitar, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Just my $.02,
Jim

I've never been a fan of Fender bullets. I didn't like them and they just looked wrong in my Mustang back in the 70's. The ends looked unfinished, like they were made in the Soviet Union That being said, I just got a new USA Strat, and the strings are ball ends (Balls? More like brass tire rims. Didn't some company back in the day actually use balls on the ends?).

I've used many other brands over the years -- Ernie Balls, GHS, D'Addario, etc. --so I don't really care, but what the heck is Fender doing here?

BTW, I don' think I've used "balls" so much in any post on any forum ever, but just in case:

balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls, balls
