I would like to wire my strat so that in pos 3(middle pickup) I get the neck and bridge pickups on together. So it would look like 1 bridge, 2 bridge/middle, 3 bridge/neck, 4 neck/middle, 5 neck. I would like to use reg 5 way. I think the 50s custom classics are wired this way. Any help would be appreciated.

Wire it like this. It's how David Gilmour's strat is wired, which leaves your 5way wired as is, but an added toggle wired in will do what you want. all you do is follow this wiring diagram, drill a small hole in your pick guard for a small on/off toggle. This way you have a normal function 5way, and when you want the neck/bridge you flip the toggle.

Howdy & Welcome!

Unfortunately you'll need to replace your current 5 way with a 5 Way Super Switch.

Alternatively, the diagram in the link Arnold Layne posted above will give you options for Neck & Bridge and also Neck, Middle and Bridge. personally I'd go for the switch. If you don't fancy installing a toggle switch you could achieve the same options by replacing one of the tone controls with a push pull pot.

Hope this helps.

Andy

I'm actually in the process of adding a neck on toggle switch to my strat. Its a pretty common mod but I believe most people prefer the discretion of a push pull or push push pot. the choice was a nobrainer for a starving musician like me, £1 for a on/on toggle from my local hardware store or the best part of a tenner ordering off the internet.

Here's another idea to ponder, I'm also adding a phase switch for the bridge pickup so I can get the hollow tones from the second position and the new neck +bridge.

At the risk of being the devil on your shoulder, here's more info.
