..... And as for the Toyota Corolla love, my better half has a Toyota Matrix ( Corolla platform ) it gets you here and there, it rattles, it's plastic, it's basically a throwaway , or as Chris Harris described a certain car as " A shopping Trolley " but it's still nevertheless impossible to get around when snow gets to 6+inches and in the WCS of an accident I'd rather not be in the Toyota...

Actually, I was trying to make the point that everyone values their dollar differently.

And for reference, I live in NH but work at Hartford Hospital in CT - where you are advertised to live. I'm 39 and have driven used Toyota Corrolla's my whole life and never had a problem - even with Hartford's horrific job plowing downtown this past weekend (wtf? Washington St. with the Hospital, State Capital, Courthouse and Police Barracks weren't cleaned out 3 days later?)

My point is this:

For $1k you could

1. Have one of those fancy Iphones and get 1 year (maybe) of phone/texting/internet (I have the old-school flip).
2. Buy an HDTV (don't care)
3. 4 Months of HDTV service with premium channels (don't care)
4. 2 car payments on an expensive car (vs. my corolla which works fine in the snow)

I bought an American Strat, and unlike that douchey guy who thinks people with opinions on guitars that aren't in a band must be losers, I'm not good enough to be in a band. You could make out the song I'm trying to play, and maybe throw me a few dollars to stop. Most people here are better than me.

My younger brother is good enough and plays in a band, and he'd sound better on a Squire than I do.

Still, I love it.

My Am. HSS Strat is amazing - neck, playability...whatever it is. And I plan to buy another.

Granted, if all I could buy was a Squire I would be so thankful, but I believe that the American Strat is VERY fairly priced for the quality that I've received, and I'm more than happy to adjust other parts of my budget to purchase them.

That's me. No judgement for anyone else who feels different.

My wife, like a lot of your wives, would rather....well, you know. I guess that's why I also have BEATS by Dre headphones (which I love, btw) and a LINE6 POD to disappear for a bit.

Hmm.. but your Beats and the Line6 are garage sale items once used -- more or less. If you invest in a good quality fender and keep good care of it and in good shape, it will go up in value.

Just saying.

An excellent point - my Strat will be worth more than the IPhone, HDTV and expensive car in 10 years...combined, probably.

re: Beats by Dre Headphones and the Line6 POD, you are also correct here - they will be worth nothing in terms of resale, so I'll get every nickel out of them myself. :D

EDIT to add: I play my Strat through the Line6 and into the BEATS headphones and disappear while my wife watches whatever on TV.

Hmmm... I tend to disagree to a certain point.

If you buy a new strat today for let's say 1000 dollars and put it up on eBay the next day, unplayed and condition as new, you have already lost sth around 200 dollars (educated guess).

If it is 5 years old, played but in good condition, you'll probably get sth around 600 to 700 for it.
(depending on model and color).

You can be lucky if you find a way to take advantage of the completely senseless vintage mania though.

Example: A 1979 American Strat (standard model, nothing fancy) was priced at around 700 Euros (Germany) about 6 years ago. With strats from the 60s getting rarer and rarer to find, the 70s strats now climb in price. They ask over 1000 Euros now (late 70s)!!

This is even more surprising since everybody knows about the inferior and steadily decreasing quality of Fender guitars during the CBS aera (1965 to 1985).

Still, if you had bought a '79 strat used(!) 6 years ago, you would have made some profit (figurewise)!

That would be a plus of sth around 300 to 500 Euros in 6 years = 50 to approx. 80 bucks a year. Taking inflation rates into account (living gets more and more expensive), the bargain becomes zero!

So:
First you gotta catch the perfect moment for buying just before an aera of guitars starts increasing in price (almost impossible to determine). For 80s Fender guitars I'd assume more than 10 years from now just because of the age factor. I won't even start thinking of 90s guitars or guitars after 2000 because there's so many of them produced.

So, taking all this into account, you might be looking at a very little price increase of 80s and 90s guitars for the next maybe 20 years. I doubt that this is a worthwhile investment.
Furthermore you gotta take into account that you'll need money to keep it running (unless you store it away in its case). And it takes into account that you MUST buy used, otherwise the entire price raise will be lost within the first year in comparison to the price you payed new.

Who knows, Fender might be completely out of fashion by then because some other dude might invent the "ultimate guitar" or whatever. There's awesome guitar improvements out there already!

In my opinion it's pretty senseless to buy a guitar as investment (or counting on it) unless you're a lucky devil who finds some senile old lady who sells you a 1954 strat from her passed away husband for 1000 dollars because she knows nothing about it and it was useless lying around in the attic for decades.

I agree if one expects at least a stagnation in price. If you buy a used American Standard for let's say 650 Euros today, it will most likely bring in 650 in 10 years if you keep it in good shape. If you buy it new for 1000 bucks today, it will most likely also bring in 650 in 10 years.

Of course: the rarer or more sought after model you buy, the more you will get but you also will have to invest more!
My observation during the past years showed that as soon as it says 60s RI (for example! I mean everything that says 60 in it's model name) automatically increases prices. (talk about vintage mania!).

This means that you would additionally have to be able to judge the model you're buying and how it would increase in popularity. Also almost impossible to say.

People don't care how much you paid or what the specs are, just you make music that is pleasing.

... Roughly About 90% of the audience isn't going to be able to distinguish the difference between a strat and a les paul guitar, or for that matter a Marshall or a fender amp. And even if they guessed correctly, I guarantee they won't know whether it was a top of the line model or an entry level one. All they care about is whether it sounds like the song being covered or that its entertaining. The other 10% or so, the musicians, are the ones who can usually tell the difference.

... Just look at the audience dancing and having a good time. Walk up to any of them and ask them if they know what kind of guitar you were using or what amp you plugged into and they'll likely give you this look... :? Ask them what songs you just played and they'll most likely answer correctly.
With that said, to each his own......

Totally agree.

I once DJayed for a large family social event to raise funds for a bride and groom. Using two open reel tape decks (pre-digital days), I noticed the current song was playing backwards on a twisted tape. As I was about to crossfade with style, my buddy said, "Aw let it run. Look! They're having fun dancing on the floor", and so they were.LOL. (The liquid lunch didn't hurt either).
