Depends how good the fretwork is ^^ I don't really have a preference, but if I were building a custom shop I'd probably go with the C. If I had that kind of money though I'd have them build me one with every kind of neck just because I could, and everybody knows neck shape affects tone :P

No one shape is particularly better than the other; it really comes down to the shape of the individual's hands.

I personally can never decide. Some guitars just feel better than others. I love the altered V of the HR '57 strat, but I also find C's to be pretty comfortable aswell.

Oh well  Just give me a strat and I'll be happy.

I like the V-shape on my AVRI 57. It's a soft V. I've felt a hard V and it was very uncomfortable to play. But soft V is my favorite.

Hi everybody.
I have just joined this very interesting forum, so be kind.
Amongst my eleven guitars, I have six Strats and one tele.
The 1971 has a deep D neck, the MIJ 50s tele and 50s Strat have V necks and the remainder have C necks.
I find that, after playing any particular one for a period of time, my hand gets used to it, and the others seem strange, and vice versa.
They all beat my old 'baseball bat' Echo 12 string though.

I think the V-Neck is a love/hate thing. There aren't many in the middle. I have played a V neck and really liked it, but I have not owned one and played it a lot...so I don't know in the long run how that would work, but I think it is a nice feel. You will just have to try it in the store and if you like it there on first thought... you may be ok with it... If you have mixed feelings while you are playing it, then I would not get it.

I am not plugging Guitar Center, and I don't work there, but they have a great return policy on new and used gear. I think they give you a month to figure out if you like what you buy.

For me, this is very important, because in a store, I have a hard time making sense of an instrument or amp until I get it in my environment and it is a good fit. I buy a lot of gear and most of it comes from GC store and their used online site... which is great. You can see all the used gear from the entire chain of stores and you call them and they ship it to you. I bought a guitar from a GC in Oklahoma from online and returned it to a GC in Tennessee. They never question why I want to return something and they are just good about all of it. This is incentive to shop there. I don't know about other online stores or other chain music stores, but GC has done me right. I don't mind paying maybe a couple of points more for something with that type of return policy.

Good Luck,

TJ

Well I don't know that I'd be going for a complete disembowelment. It's likely that you've been following the STARZ mini-series Spartacus from your query. In that you've resurrectedt this thread, I may as well bring you forward from the date of my last contribution herein. I presently own a VG Deluxe, and an '89 Clapton. Waiting for me on my return to the snowy North is a '57VHR. These are all versions of the v-neck. The Deluxe carries the Fender generic V which known technically as a 10/56 profile. You'll also find it on the Buddy Guy, Jimmy Vaughn, and some other Artist Series guitars. The Clapton is a modified V which is sleeker and slimmer, and the '57VHR is even a softer version. All three of these are to my preference with latter two more-so. In addition, I have a Gilmour which sports what has been tagged as a '57RI neck which is the type of neck which was made for the original back in the '80's, when the neck was deemed needing replacement. It is a C-neck profile without the heavy shoulders characteristic of the modern-C, and is described in further detail in the Custom Shop products section. I also have a Les Paul with what is known as the 60's fast neck, less chunkier than the '59. In addition to those I've cited, you might audition guitars of the American Vintage, Classic, Classic Player and Road Worn Series in both 50' and 60's configuration. reading the specs in the products section first. and see how they suit your fretting hand.. Keep us posted.
Doc

So would the Jimmy Vaughan be the least expensive of the V-neck offerings?

I can't afford any of those higher end models.

The Road Worn Series have V necks... At least the 50's model Strat does. I think that is less expensive than the Jimmy Vaughan.

The Jimmie Vaughn, Road Worn 50's, Classic 50's and Classic Player 50's are all within the same price point and have v-necks. Go into the products section and compare and contrast these guitars and then go out to vendors and audition them. You will see that they vary in finishes, and electronics. There may be subtle differences in the neck feels of these guitars as well, particulary the Road Worn. If you log into The Music Zoo's website, you can find fine examples of each of the guitars noted above, nicely photographed as well as street prices which I am confident may be within your range. You can use them as a reference point when shopping locally, or order directly on line from them. Showcase Dealers have a reputation to uphold, so that's a plus. On a personal note, the Classic Player 50's seems to be the overall winner of the lot IMHO, unless you particular tastes run to something else. Keep us posted as to your choice.

Ever wonder why Clapton maintained the V-neck when he and Fender designed the first signature series guitar ever for him in the late 80's.
He had been playing Gibsons earlier.

For me, my fretting hand is not comfortable close to the neck joint with the flatter profile of the modern C-shape. I get more support in the span between my thumb and index finger with the V-neck.

i imagine, even though he was playing gibsons, he prefered the neck on the martins and blackie.
i actually love the feel of both c neck and vneck, have to admit though, when i play my v necks, i wanna play more clapton stuff than srv or mayer. dont know why....

A.R.Duchossoir reflects in his book that, in the development of the Signature Series guitar, they 'copied' the neck on the old Blackie. I had the opportunity to speak to someone who actually had had both the original and the tribute series guitars in his hands in 2006 and his impressions of that old neck was that it seemed more of a 'u' shape than a 'v' given the wear. In any event, the current neck is a one of a kind, having no comparison to anything in the Fender lineup except possibly the neck on the '57VHR. Niki and I did some interesting numbers comparisons way awhile back on those two, but I'll have a more direct comparison of that straightaway, come the 8th of January. I'll have both guitars in the house by then. So we can get back to this in future.
