I just picked up what I think is a pretty good deal on a fender hot rod deluxe amp and a 1995 MIM Fender Strat in sunburst color. The amp needs repaired and I am in the midst of that right nowhttp://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=83243. But the strat is in really good condition. I got both for $300 on craigslist.

What I want to do is swap out the stock white pick guard for a nice tortoise shell. I also plan on swapping out the zinc trem block for a brass or steel one. The tuners seem to do a pretty good job so i don't think I need to do anything there. So it comes to this. I want to drop some nice pick-ups into this thing and I am willing to drop up to $200 for them. I play alot of classic ten and vs era Pearl Jam, and Jimi Hendrix stuff. I love that style of tone and I want to get some pickups that will get me closer to that tone than what my current set up (the OPs) is getting me.

I am sorry to bombard y'all with more pick-up questions but I am hoping to turn this into a pretty decent gig'n guitar and I figured I would ask the people who know these things best and don't have a buck to make on their suggestions.

+1 :D

Just last night a buddy was playing my 2012 Am Std (Fat 50s) through the HRDlx on the clean channel, and got some great Hendrix tones. It was pretty cool as he usually plays a LP-style guitar with hum-buckers using a good deal of distortion, and now he really wants to get a Strat. :)

In addition to the pups already mentioned, I'd suggest the Duncan SSL-1's...personal taste thing but I typically prefer the Duncan's over the Fenders.

Also on the trem block, while I don't blame you a bit for wanting to swap the zinc block, for the music styles you listed, I would suggest avoiding the brass blocks. They're pretty good for country or even some Texas blues stuff but just -way- to bright for most rock/classic rock. The GFS steel blocks are decent but the Callahams (in my always and ever so humble opinion) are well worth the extra money. I'm not sure what Callaham does differently from everyone else, but those blocks just sound -awesome- in a Mexi Strat.

As far as the tuners go, I have 2 Mexi standards. Unless you have some specific preference for Sperzals or something, I'd leave the Mexi tuners alone...I've never had a problem with them (I -think- they're actually made by Schaller but I could be wrong).

And yes...even with the amp in need of repair, you got a good deal :-).

Just my own opinions...use them for what they're worth!
Jim

1018 CRS (Cold-Rolled Steel), not cast. Callaham is my choice also. The GFS blocks, and most others too, pale in comparison. Just because a block has steel in it and attracts a magnet doesn't tell the whole story, it could still be soft leaded steel, or even cast. I remember that there was another guy, in England I think, that also made blocks from CRS 1018.....and there are others that make the claim of using 1018 CRS, but I'm unconvinced.

go with the 69's, grey bottoms are sought after amongst originality lovers. fat 50's are on american standards so everyone is going to be playing them, plus I like period correct which they are not, doesn't make them bad, I just prefer authenticity. go grey.
