 One of these is in my near future...

FSR Antigua Strat

Pawn Shop 70s Deluxe Strat

I want an unusual looking strat with a 70s-style large machine head and have my eye on these two. Very conflicted!

I have only read good things about the Antigua. Only 500 made and purportedly very good craftsmanship. And, of course, the Antigua is a "real" strat with Alnico 5s (which may get replaced down the road w/ Billy Corgan DiMarzios if I decide to make it a heavier strat!)

The Pawn Shop 70s is a brand new model and no reviews appear to be available yet. However the Fender Enforcer humbucker appears to get rave reviews. I love the strat/tele fusion styling with the 70s strat neck and head!

Anyone have any thoughts or comments? Unfortunately for me, snatching up both is not an option! posting.php?mode=post&f=6#

Lots of opinions for sure but it's your decision, depending on where you put your priorities.
Take the one which fits your idea of a strat NOW, including possible upgrades to make it a heavy strat (which is possible with both).

If I have to make a dicision (and I just had while reducing my collection), I go for details:

I want a 22nd fret, so everything without has to go (as long as there's another one with as good a sound or better). So my beloved SRV neck went for sale, so were all other parts of that particular project strat.
I want SSS config, because for my heavy stuff I use my Ibanezes. So the Lone Star (HB at bridge) had to go.
....and so on.

Just make a list of "must haves", then look which model has it.
If both meet your wanted specs equally good, decide by the looks
After decision, play some of that particular model at the store and pick the one you like most.
If both are head to head, play both and decide on sound and playability.

All great and practical advice, Dee!

I can't play either unfortunately! Both are not available in the St. Louis area and will have to be ordered online. I already have a Lone Star HSS and a Dean Schenker HH V... so the Antigua would make a nice SSS for my collection. The Antigua also has the 7.25 radius neck where both of my current guitars are 9.5. I have no idea if a 3-bolt neck means anything... but it has one. I love the color and the 500 limited run means it will become harder to find as time rolls on.

The Pawn Shop is just plain cool! I have no idea if Fender just runs these for a year or if they might become permanent. I did not like any of the original Pawn Shop models but the 70s Deluxe really speaks to me! Having a tele neck pup and a Enforcer hb, there is not much "strat" left except for the body and neck. Neck on this one is also 70s style maple but it is a 9.5 radius. It is also a string-thru hardtail like the Billy Corgan and Robert Cray strats which I like. But it is brand new out of NAMM 2013 and I can find no buyer reviews on it.

Might become a decision based on price... I can get an Antigua used for much less than the Pawn Shop. And Robin in Germany on these boards highly recommended it!
