I just found out I need an acoustic guitar in a hurry. I never play acoustic and I'd like to find one that looks and sounds like an acoustic but feels like an electric - fast slim neck, light gauge strings, etc. Does such a thing exist? I don't want to spend a ton of money on this. How about those Fenders that look like they have a Strat neck? Thanks!

If you're looking for a thin and relatively lifeless acoustic sound, go for the Fender Acoustasonic (the one with the strat neck).

Detailed Pictures here:
http://www.vintage-guitars.se/2002-2003 ... 115762.htm

If you play it via an amp, it's okay since you can form sound and depth with the amp controls.
It's got piezo pickups installed.
I really didn't like it when I played it purely acousticly.

If you're looking for a voluminous, good sounding acoustic, buy a big one, Dreadnaught kinda thing (unless you WILL play via an amp, then an electro-acoustic's fine, too).

Have a look at the Ovation guitars. The neck is close to the feel of an electric (43 mm nut width, soft v profile) and they sound pretty good, even unplugged. You can choose between a super shallow, medium and deep bowl (body depth).

+1 on the Ovation for the electric feel. You can pick up a Celebrity Deluxe on CL relatively cheap, and sound very nice plugged in, and a nice thin neck.

-1 on all plastic/resin bodied guitars, unless you don't mind the horrible sound they produce. :?

I agree on how they sound acoustically, plugged in the ovations sound quite nice, at least to me. op didn't really specify if he's plugging in or not, but finding an acoustic that sounds large on tone unplugged and plays like an electric may be a tall order. Acoustic and electric as you know are 2 very different animals.
IMO better to buy a nice acoustic and get used to a different feel.

A guitar that "looks and sounds like an acoustic but feels like an electric", hum? Take a look on the Fender Sonoran SCE Thinline. Not really expensive, very "straty" slim neck, very satisfactory sound. The body itself presents a good «electric-sized acoustic guitar». I've tried it myself on the store. And i find it beautiful, by the way :P

If you want to take a step further in sound quality, and you don't care about spending a little more for a really good guitar (still without spending a ridiculous amount of cash), look for Fender Kingman SCE. I own it for 4/5 years now and man... that is a GREAT buying without destroying your finances! Lol

Cheers.

+1 on the Sonoran SCE Thinline. Nice sound amp'd or not and a fast neck.

I agree with Moochy13, my Yamaha has a very "Strat feeling" neck and a very rich tone. I was looking for one under $500.00 and played every one at Guitar Center, not liking anything, until, as I was walking out of the acoustic room, I looked up and in the very top corner was this beautiful Yamaha. I had the salesman get it down and I strummed one G chord and said this is the sound I was looking for! Paid $350 for it and I haven't ever regretted the purchase. :D

I have to agree- yamaha make some good acoustics for the money. I love the neck on them, just not a fan of the string spacing for fingerpicking.

Older yamaha FG guitars are the best.

If you can find one, I highly recommend the Acoustasonic Series Stratocaster, IF you are playing plugged in. Not to be confused with the Stratacoustic, The Acoustasonic Series was made in Mexico, with a hollowed-out alder Strat body, braceless graphite top, 22 fret Strat neck, and Fishman piezo bridge. I picked one up in 2012 and it quickly became my number one acoustic. It even sounds good unplugged, but does not have enough volume to compete unplugged with a traditional acoustic guitar. If you want an acoustic that feels like a strat, I think the Acoustasonic is the definitive answer - it really IS an acoustic Stratocaster :D

+1 on the Yamaha FG acoustics - I got mine in 1984 and it still plays great

I think you are talking apples to oranges in about as big a way as possible. I've played accoustic for 30 years and electric for about 3 years, and I can not imagine a more different feeling between these two stringed instuments. Even if you find a neck that is V or C shaped, the feel is vastly different - particularly if you haven't played with one much before, and judging from your question, it sounds like you haven't. Being able to play on an accoustic the way you would on an electric (in terms of speed and dexterity) would take a lot of practice on the accoustic. To get a sense of that, go listen to Clarence White (formerly of the Byrds, The White Brothers and The Kentucky Colnels.), Neil Young, Stephen Stills or listen to the way Clapton plays accoustic as opposed to electric. Vastly different styles for the most part, though Clarence White, and I think that his bluegrass background aided him in this regard is, equally adept at flying across the finger board on either incarnation.

I'm going to have to give the Ovation's a ++1 as well. Ovations tend to fall into one of two catagories: "love them" or "hate them"...there's very little gray area in between (obviously I'm in the "love them" catagory). In addition to the rounded backs, no, they don't really sound like most traditional acoustics unplugged. That said, I do have to take issue with Minisoda's comments about all plastic/resin guitars sounding horrible. Different, yes. Horrible...not by a long shot! In fact some of the higher end Ovations, such as he Balladeer's sound -very- lovely as just acoustics. And honestly, my 257 and even my cheapy Applause aren't really that bad unplugged (and the 257 sounds awesome thru an amp!). In fact my Applause has become my favorite campfire/riverside guitar in recent years...plays nice, decent sound (for a cheap acoustic) and if the need arises, I can still plug her in. On the other hand it's also worth mentioning that I do NOT like instruments such as Martin's and Taylor's and such...they just tend to sound dull, flat and lifeless to me. If your taste tends to run along those lines, you'd likely be disappointed with a resin body guitar of any make. That said however, there's a lot of pros out there...top notch players from Al DiMeola to the Wilson sisters in Heart...that absolutely swear by Ovations.

As far as necks go (which was the OP's original question), yea...you just can't beat an Ovation for my money! Don't get me wrong...I actually love the wider spacing of my Seagull S6 for stuff like finger picking, but for tearing it up and doing leads and such, an Ovation neck is really hard to beat. Stratacoustics are decent, Ovations are just better in my opinion.

Just my own opinions as always,
Jim
