You found it where? In the classifieds? eBay? In a store? Is it used? New? Got any pics of the dents?

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

its in a store. its not large dents -- nicks and chips but on a high priced guitar.

 good point and touche.. :-)

but we all know that if *you* were to buy a brand new one without any nicks or chips and then tried to turn around and return it to the store -- they would all cry murder and claim its lost 50% of the value.

The cause of such a condition has to be from handling in the store. Because of these "defects", you should consider offering a value in the range of USED one. Though having a warranty as new has some value.

+1

An equitable position IMO.

Yes, I agree. It also turns out that it was purchased and return -- I guess within the 30 day period. How do you determine the value of a used 2012 model?

The same way you buy a wife - offer one camel, then see how many of your herd they actually want.

Or in other words, start low-ball and talk it through.

Basically, yes. Do you have a figure in mind for what you'd be prepared to pay, top dollar? Try offering them that, less 20%. Wave cash. If they accept, you've won. If they don't, ask them how much they do want - some stores have a policy for discounting for that sort of thing.
